Crisp County was created from Dooly County by an act of the General Assembly of Georgia on August 17, 1905. It was the state's 138th county and was one of four counties created that day. Four more Georgia counties were created the next day.
Cordele, the county seat, was founded in 1888. It is named after Miss Cordelia Hawkins, daughter of Colonel Samuel H. Hawkins.Colonel Hawkins was president of the Savannah, Americus and Montgomery Railroad which passed through this 'hub' city.
