Columbia County

Columbia County was created in 1790 from Richmond Co.

LAST UPDATED - Jan 2024

Columbia County was created Dec 10,1790 from the northern part of Richmond County, becoming the 12th county formed in Georgia. The county was named for Christopher Columbus. Appling is the current county seat. Columbia County lies along the Savannah River in east central Georgia, bordering South Carolina, just northwest of Augusta. In the colonial era, the territory that constitutes Columbia County was laid out as a part of St. Paul Parish. It was created in response to a request by backcountry settlers that they be given court sessions that would be more convenient than those held in Augusta. There were many land exchanges. On Dec 19, 1793, Columbia gave up land to Warren County. In March 1856, Columbia took more land from Richmond County. In October of 1870, land was given up to create McDuffie County. In August of 1872, boundries between McDuffie and Columbia were changed.
