Jarrett's inn

This Is A Part of The GAGenWeb  and The USGenWeb Project

Located on the banks of Lake Hartwell and known today as Traveler's Rest the inn was known in the past as Jarrett's Inn, Jarrett's Manor and possibly Wyly's Inn. The property was first granted to Major Jesse Walton around 1785. Joseph Martin owned the property in early 1800 and sold it to James R. Wyly. Wyly built a house on the site where Traveler's Rest stands today. It is thought that he may have operated an inn there, due to the high volume of traffic getting on the Unicoi Turnpike near that location. Devereaux Jarrett, a large land owner just across the Tugalo (Tugaloo) River which today is part of Hartwell Lake, purchased the property from Wyly and moved across the river into the house (inn). From there he was on his way to being known as the richest man around. Jarrett, in addition to operating an inn, had a store, tavern, post office, blacksmith shop, tan yard, cotton gin, sawmill, toll ferry and gold mine. *Source for some of this information: The Heritage of Stephens County, 1996, Stephens County Historical Society, Inc. Today Traveler's Rest is a Georgia Historical Commission Site and is operated by The State of Georgia DNR.
