On April 21, 1874 Judge George D. Rice, Superior Court Judge of Habersham County, granted a charter for Town of Toccoa City. Before this time Toccoa City was known as Dry Pond, named for a pond in center of area which would dry up in dry weather. Due to railroad being built to Dry Pond and resulting prospects of growth the residents decided that a more fitting name should be used. The name Toccoa was adopted from nearby Toccoa Falls, a beautiful water fall named Toccoa by the Indians that inhabited that area.*Source: The History of Stephens County Georgia 1715-1972 by Trogdon, Page 181-182. |
