Rev. Richard BENNETT - b. 5/20/1826 d. 2/16/1891. Richard served in Co. 'K', 54th Volunteer Georgia Infantry Regiment, Army of Tennessee, C.S.A. He joined on April 16, 1862 and was elected 2nd Lt. On July 27, 1862 he was promoted to 1st Lt., and on December 20, 1862 he became Captain of his company. Company Rolls show he resigned May 21, 1863, but subsequent Rolls shows he remained in the service being still on the payroll on February 29, 1864. [Grandfather of Harley W. Bennett of Bacon Co.]


Banner THOMAS, Jr. - b. 1813 d. 1875. Muster Roll of Co. 'A', 54th regiment, Georgia Volunteer Infantry Army of Tennessee, CSA, Appling Co. Georgia shows: Banner Thomas - 1st Corporal, April 18, 1862. Elected to civil office and discharged August 8, 1864. Roster of Confederate Soldiers of Georgia 1861-1865, Vol 5. Thomas Mills BENNETT - b. 1845 d. 1862. Volunteering in 1861, Thomas Mills Bennett enlisted as a Private in Co. 'K', 26th Georgia Infantry Regiment. He died in the battle of 2nd Manasses, VA, August 28, 1862 [3rd Cousin, 1x removed of Harley W. Bennett of Bacon Co.]


William Jasper COTHERN - b. 1836 d. 1873. William is listed in the 'Roster of Confederate Soldiers of Georgia 1862-1865', Volume 5, on page 303 in Muster Roll of Company 'C', 50th Regiment, Georgia Volunteer Infantry. He is shown as a Private on Oct. 19, 1864. Sent to Point Lookout, Maryland Oct. 24. 1864, and transferred to Aiken's Landing for exchange on Mar. 28, 1865. He was received at Boulware and Cox's Wharves, on the James River in Virginia on Mar. 30, 1865. [Gr-Granduncle of Loyal Douglas of Bacon Co.]


Daniel Gibson HOPPS - b. 10/31/1814 d. 1892. Daniel served as a Private in Capt. David J. Miller's company of Ware county militia in the Indian War, from June 9 to Aug 19, 1838. He was later a 2nd Lieutenant in the Wayne Co. Volunteer Guard, a local militia company, 1842-1844, as well as 2nd Lieutenant in the Appling Co. militia, 583rd district, 1845-1850. Daniel served during the Civil War as a Confederate Enrolling Officer, and in 1865 was a delegate from Appling Co. to the State Constitution Convention. He also served as Representative from Wayne Co., 1873-74, and as State Senator from the 4th district, 1875-77. [Husband of the 2nd Cousin, 2x removed of Harley Bennett of Bacon Co.]


Francis Marion JAMES - b. 1836 d. 1862. Francis Marion James enlisted Sep. 29, 1861, in Company 'N', 26th Georgia Infantry Regiment, for six months, and was mustered out on Mar. 31, 1862. On May 1, 1862, he volunteered in Company 'G', 4th Georgia Cavalry; was granted sick leave and returned home where he died Nov. 17, 1862. [1st Cousin, 3x removed of Loyal Douglas of Bacon Co.]


Henry A. BENNETT - b. 11/7/1839 d. 12/31/1917. Mr. Bennett enlisted Oct 3, 1862 in Company 'A', 1st Regiment, 1st Brigade of Georgia State troops, and was appointed 4th Sergeant. This company was mustered out in April, 1862. He then enlisted April 18, 1862 with the rank of 1st Sergeant in Company 'K', 54th Georgia Infantry, C.S.A., and served until the end of the war. He was wounded in battle at Jonesboro, GA, Aug. 31, 1864, and surrendered with his command at Greensboro, NC, April 18, 1865. He was paroled at Augusta, GA in May of 1865. Moses Josiah (Bud) WESTBERRY - b. 11/29/1839 d. 6/3/1903. Moses enlisted in the Confederate army about April 15, 1862. He served in Company 'K', 54th Georgia Infantry until they surrendered in Savannah, GA on June 15, 1865. His Captain at the time was his brother-in-law, Isham Bennett. Moses was denied a Confederate pension after returning home with Isham, due to a discrepancy as to whether Isham had the right to grant him furlough. [Great-GrandUncle of J.B. Bennett of Bacon Co.]


Asbury Chapell TANNER - b. 1834 d. 8/27/1890. Enlisted as a Private on April 29, 1862. Transferred to Ga. 'F', 47th Regiment Georgia Infantry. May 12, 1862 to Co, 'A', 1st battalion, GA Sharpshooters July 30, 1862. Roll for August 31, 1864. Last on file shows him sick in General Hospital. [Grandfather of Irabelle Nelson of Bacon Co.]


Charlton WESTBERRY - b. 10/16/1825. Died while serving in the Civil War. [Granduncle of Harley W. Bennett of Bacon Co.]


David CARTER - b. 2/23/1834 d. 6/25/1912. He was a member of Company 'B', 54th GA Infantry during the Civil War. [Granduncle of George William Douglas of Bacon Co.]


Stephen W. CARTER - b. 1829 d. 9/23/1863. Enlisted with Co. 'B', 54th GA Infantry during the Civil War, and died of Typhoid fever contracted while in the Army. [Granduncle of George William Douglas of Bacon Co.]


Isaac D. CARTER - b. 5/17/1832 d. 8/10/1907. Isaac D. was a member of Company 'B', 54th GA Infantry during the Civil War. [Granduncle of George William Douglas of Bacon Co.]


Jesse CARTER - b. 1836 d. 5/12/1906. Jesse enlisted in Company 'B', 54th GA Infantry, on Apr. 21, 1862 and is buried on Bum Carter's home-place. [Granduncle of George William Douglas of Bacon Co.]


Wiley CARTER - b. 11/8/1838 d. 7/18/1880. He was also a member of Company 'B', 54th GA Infantry during the Civil War. [Granduncle of George William Douglas of Bacon Co.]


William HARRIS - d. 5/12/1864. William lived on a farm in the 1141st Militia District of Clinch Co. He enlisted in the Confederate Army in 1862 in Company 'K', 26th Volunteer Georgia Infantry Regiment, and was killed in battle in Virginia on May 12, 1864. [Husband of the 2nd cousin twice removed of Harley W. Bennett of Bacon Co.]


John Moses WESTBERRY - b. 3/13/1830 d. 11/20/1909. Enlisted as a Private in Company 'A', 1st Regiment, 1st Brigade of the Georgia State Troops on Oct. 3, 1861 for six months, and was mustered out in April of 1862. He then enlisted in Company 'K', 54th Regiment of the Georgia Infantry on April 18, 1862. He was wounded in the left thigh in a battle at Peachtree Creek near Atlanta on July 20, 1864. He was home and still disabled at the end of the war. In his later years, he was granted a Confederate pension for his service. [Granduncle of James Leon Bennett of Bacon Co.]


George Washington NELSON - b. 1810 d. 6/19/1864. Joined from Sparta, GA (Hancock Co.) July 15, 1861 as a Private in the Confederate Army. Served Company 'K' of the 15th Georgia Regiment. He was wounded and captured at Gettysburg, PA July 1863 with a ball in the shoulder. He died at Jackson Hospital from a shot in the face, June 19, 1864. Caleb WESTBERRY - b. 11/4/1841 d. 6/6/1926. Joined the Confederate Army on Sept. 9, 1861, and was a Private in Capt. Billop's Co. of "Georgia Foresters". He also appears on a muster roll of Co. 'B', 1st Reg. defending Macon, GA in Nov. and Dec. of 1865. Caleb was wounded on Nov. 30, 1864 near Atlanta, and was discharged in 1865. He recieved a pension for his service, and in 1907, the "Southern Cross of Honor". [1st cousin 3 times removed of Calvin Wesley Bennett of Bacon Co.]


Isham D. BENNETT, Sr. - b. 1839 d. aft 1855. Isham served as Captain in Company 'K', 54th Georgia Infantry of the Confederate army. His troop was captured and surrendered in Savannah, GA on June 15, 1865. A Private serving beneath him was Moses Josiah Westberry, his brother-in-law. [Husband of the Great-GrandAunt of J.B. William KNABB - b. 1832 d. 8/11/1862. Knabb enlisted May 7, 1862 in Company 'G', 32nd Georgia Regiment, CSA, and died in Savannah Confederate Hospital August 11, 1862. [Husband of the 1st cousin, twice removed of Cassie Mims of Bacon Co.]


William S. WESTBERRY - b. 1840 d. 10/4/1873. On Mar 4, 1862, William enlisted at Whitesville, Echols Co., GA, as a private in the Georgia Infantry. He was transferred to Co. 'C', 47th Regiment, Georgia Infantry on May 12, 1862. William appears on a receipt roll for clothing at a hospital in Guyton, GA, Sept. 6, 1863. During his service he was wounded at Missionary Ridge, TN, on Nov. 25, 1863, and was admitted to St. Mary's Hospital at LaGrange, GA on June 25, 1864. He was transferred from there to Oliver Hospital on July 5, 1864. In October of 1864, William was sent home to Hamilton Co. on a 60 day furlough. Michael BRANCH - b. 4/13/1831 d. 9/21/1945. Michael Branch was a 2nd Lieutenant Civil War. He was badly wounded in the Battle of Atlanta, and got gangrene in his wounds. He was able to get to Savannah, GA., and someone in a wagon brought him to Prentiss, GA (between Baxley & Grahan). He was confined to a wheelchair for about a year, and suffered the rest of his life from the wounds he had received. [1st cousin 3 times removed of Cassie Mims of Bacon Co.]


Shadrack (Shade) THORNTON - b. 3/8/1848. Shade entered the Confederate Army in July 1864 at Macon GA. He was only 16 years old at the time, but cited his birth date as 1846 to get in. He did his service in Co. 'I', 6th Georgia Militia Regiment. These troops consisted of young boys and old men, and were called up by the Governor to defend against General Sherman's troops. They fought as hard as they could, but were helpless against Sherman's veterans. Shade was discharged March 1865, at Briar Creek Station between Millen and Augusta. [Husband of the Aunt of Harley W.
