Biographical Notes on Barney O. Garrison and Nancy Samantha
Owen by Shirley Rivers:
Barney
and Samantha Garrison were married 30 March 1865 and were the parents of 8
children. Barney did not fight in the
Civil War because he had fallen on a sharp rock when he was about 17 years old
and walked with the aid of a cane. He
worked for his wife’s brother, Francis (Frank ) Owen, who owned the mill in
Homer, Ga. Samantha died young and was
buried at Mt. Pleasant Methodist Church Cemetery, Homer, Banks County, Ga.,
next to her two young boys, Willie and Elijah.
All three are buried in unmarked graves. After Samantha’s death, the family moved to High Shoals, Ga.,
(Walton County) where the older children worked in the cotton mill and took
care of the family. After the eldest
daughter, Nancy Elizabeth (“Lizzie”) married Henry Martin Shelnutt on 29 Feb.
1888, the two younger children went to live with them, and the oldest living
son, John, continued to care for Barney until his death. Barney was confined to his rocking chair for
the final four years of his life due to strokes.
Barney and two of his children, Jane
(“Alice”) and David, were buried in unmarked graves in the Old High Shoals
Baptist Church Cemetery. Descendants of
Lizzie Shelnutt and John Garrison continue to meet at a family reunion nearly
every February at Union Christian Church in Watkinsville, Georgia.
