Confederate Pension Application of Robert C. Alexander

 

State of Georgia

Banks County.

R. C. Alexander of said State and County, hereby applies for the pension provided by the Act of 1910, as amended by Act of 1919, to Confederate Soldiers, and submits his sworn statement, with his testimony to make out the same, and after being duly sworn true answers to make to the questions propounded, answers as follows, to-wit:

1. What is your name and where do you reside? (Give County and Post Office)

R. C. Alexander.  Homer, Banks County, Ga.

2. How long and since when have you been a continuous resident of this State?

Have resided in State of Georgia 71 years.

3. Did you enlist in the Army of the Confederate States or in the organized militia of this State from 1861-1865?

Yes.

4. When and where, and in what Company and Regiment did you enlist?  (Give the arm and class of Service.)

April 1864 at Mossy Creek Campground in White County Georgia in Co. D 11th Georgia Calvary.

5. How long did you remain in the actual military service with said Company and Regiment ? (Give date of discharge.)

Until discharged in April 1865.

6. When and where was your Company and Regiment surrendered or discharged from the Service?

In April 1865 at Columbia S. C.

7. Were you actually present with your command when it was surrendered or discharged?

No.

8. If you were not actually present, state specifically and clearly where you were.

Was near Laurens Courthouse S. C. Confined with measles.

a. Where was your command when you left it?

Between Columbia S. C. and Camden S. C.

b. When did you leave the command?

About the 24th of April 1865.

c. For what cause did you leave?

Sick with measles.

d. By whose authority did you leave?

By order of Capt. Griggs.

e. For how long was your leave granted?  In what way?

Until able to return to command.

f. Why did you not return to your command after leave expired?

War closed before was able to return.

g. In what way were you prevented?

By being sick.

h. What effort did you make to return?

None.

i. Where you captured during the war?

No.

j. If so, when and where?  In what prison were you held and when were you released?

9. Are you drawing a pension of any amount from this State of the United States?

No.

10. Have you ever applied for the Georgia Pension and had it refused? And for what cause was it refused?

No.

Jack Ballew of said State and County is hereby presented as a witness in support of the application of R. C. Alexander for the pension provided by the Act of 1910, as amended by the Act of 1919 in said State, and, after being duly sworn true answers to make to the questions propounded, answers as follows:

1. What is your name and where do you reside?

Jack Ballew.  Habersham County.  Clarkesville Ga.

2. How long and since when have you know R. C. Alexander the applicant?

65 years, since 1855.

3. Where does he now reside, and since when has he been a bona fide, continuing resident in this State?

Banks County.  Homer Ga. All his life-71 years,

4. When, where and in what Company and Regiment did R. C. Alexander enlist during the was from 1861-1865?

April 1864.  Mossy Creek, White County Georgia.  Co. D 11th Ga. Cavalry.

5. How did you obtain your information of this Service?

I served in the same Company and Regiment.

6. How long within your own personal knowledge did he perform actual military service with this Company and Regiment? (Give date.)

April 1864 until the surrender in April 1865.

7. When and where was his command surrendered or discharged? (Give date and place.)

April 1865-Columbia, S. C.

8. Were you personally present at the surrender?

Yes.

9. If not, where were you and how came you there?

I was present.

10. Was the applicant personally present with his command at surrender?

No.

11. If not where was he and how came his there?

Sick with measles.

12. When did he leave his Command?

April 1865.

Where was his Command when he left it?

Columbia S. C.

For what cause did he leave?

Sick with measles.

By whose authority did he leave?

Captain Griggs.

And how long was he granted leave?

Until able to return.

How do you know all that you stated to be true?  If of your own knowledge, tell clearly and specifically.

I was with him when he took the measles and he never recovered until after surrender.

13. In what way was he prevented from returning to his command? How do you know?

I was with him when he was taken sick.

14. What effort did he make to return to his command and how do you know?

He could not return.  The surrender came before he recovered.

15. Was applicant captured as a prisoner?

No.

If so, when and where?

And when released?

He was never captured.

I, J. A. Robertson Ordinary of said County, certify that I know the applicant R. C. Alexander for pension is the person he represents himself to be and resides in said county.  That I also know Jack Ballew the witness swearing to the service; that they are both residents of said county and were duly sworn by me before signing the foregoing affidavit and they are truthful and trustworthy and their statements are entitled to full faith and credit.

Note-Robert C. Alexander, July 25, 1845-January 11, 1921 is buried at Homer Presbyterian Church cemetery in Homer, Banks County, Georgia, beside his second wife, Blanche Bowden Alexander, January 3, 1863-May 17, 1946.
