Confederate Widow’s Pension of Cynthia Pruitt Allan

 

Affidavit to be Made by the Widow.

 

State of Georgia

County of Banks.

In person came before me, the undersigned Ordinary in and for the County of Banks, Mrs. Cynthia Allan, who being duly sworn according to law, says under oath that she is the widow of William Allan, who was a soldier in the service of the Confederate States, and served as a member of Company D, of the 43rd Regiment of Georgia Volunteers; that he enlisted in said service on or about the tenth day of March 1862, and while in the Army, and was in the Army up to October 1862.  That while in the Army, he was on the [blank] day of [blank] 1860_, “He was on the march from Kentucky to Lenoir Station Tenn. the last that [ ink smudge-“disease”?] I ever heard from him as he never came home.”

Deponent further swears that she was the wife of said deceased soldier during is term of service in the Army, and that she has never married since his death; that she became his wife on the 7th day of October 1858 [there is a record of a marriage in Franklin County, Ga. between William J. Allen and Cynthia Pruett on 19 Jan. 1859], and that she has resided in the State of Georgia continuously since the 17th day of November 1826, and since said date she has not lived in any other State of locality.  Deponent, as the widow of a deceased soldier husband, applies for the pension provided for by Act of the General Assembly of Georgia, approved December 23rd, 1890, for the pension year ending February 15th, 1892, and herewith tenders the proof of her right to receive the allowance granted by said Act.

Certificate of Ordinary of the County of Applicant’s Residence.

State of Georgia, County of Banks.

I, T. F. Hill Ordinary in and for said County of Banks State of Georgia, hereby certify that I am acquainted with Mrs. Cyntha Allan the applicant for a pension in this case, and know from my own knowledge (or from positive proof presented to me by reputable witnesses) that she resides in this County, and that she resided in the State of Georgia on December 23, 1890, and has not lived out of the State since that date.  That she is the widow of William Allan deceased, and as such has heretofore been allowed a pension for the year ending February 15th, 1896.

In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal of my office, this the 11th day of January 1897.

Power of Attorney.

State of Georgia, Banks County.

I. Cyntha Allan hereby authorize T. F. Hill of Homer Ga. to receive and receipt for the pension paid hereon and request that he remit the same to me at Homer GA.

Note-The 1897 folio for Cynthia Allan has a note stating “To Franklin Co., 1898.”

The surname Allan is also spelled Allen in many records.  Service records for William J. Allen/Allan, Co. D. 43rd Regt.-“Roll for March 10-Oct. 31 1862, last on which borne, shows him absent, left in Kentucky.  Died of fever October 2, 1862.”
