State of Georgia,

Banks County.

Mrs. N. G. Bolton of said State and County, desiring to avail herself of the Pension allowed to Indigent Widows of Confederate Soldiers, under Act of General Assembly, passed [blank] 1900, hereby submits her proofs, and after being sworn true answers to make to the following questions, deposes and answers as follows:

1. What is your name and where do you reside?  (Give State, County and Post-Office.)

N. G. Bolton and I reside in Banks County Ga.

2. How long and since when have you been a resident of this State?

Since March 29th day 1833 in Oglethorpe County, Ga.

3. When and where were you born?

March 29th day 1833 in Oglethorpe County, Ga.

4. When and where was your husband born-state his full name, and when you and he were married?  (Attach copy of marriage license in every case.)

Feb. 19th day 1831 in Oglethorpe County. His name Elijah Franklin Bolton.  We were married Dec. 22nd 1853. [marriage affidavit states Dec. 21, 1853]

5. When and where and in what Company and Regiment did you husband enlist and serve during the war between the States?  He enlisted the 13th day of May 1862 at Jefferson, Ga., in Co. E 34th Ga. Regiment.

6. How long did your husband serve in said Company and Regiment?

Over two years or until the 31st day of August 1864 when he was wounded.

7. When and where did your husband’s Company and Regiment surrender and was discharged?

Surrendered at Greensborough, N. C., 26th day of April 1865.

8. Was your husband present at the time and place where his Company and Regiment surrendered?

He was not.  He was at home on crutches from wounds caused in the service.

9.  If not with his command at surrender, state clearly and specifically where he was, when he left command, for what cause, and by what authority?

He was wounded in both legs at the battle of Jonesborough.  He was brought home after staying [in] hospital until October 1864 and was unable to return to service.  He went on crutches.

10. When and where did your husband die?

He died 15th Dec. 1905 at his home in Banks County.

11. Which of the following grounds do you base your application for Pension, viz: First-Age and Poverty; Second-Infirmity and Poverty, or Third-Blindness and Poverty?

Age, infirmity and poverty.

12. If upon the first ground, state how long you have been in such condition that you cannot earn your support.  If upon the second, give a full and complete history of the infirmity and its extent.  If upon the third, state whether you are totally blind and when and where you lost your sight?

I am seventy three years old.  I have been in this condition stated ten years, that is I have chronic bronchitis, constipation, lumbago and heart trouble.

13. What has been your occupation since your husband’s death?

I have been unable to do anything.

14. How much can you earn, gross, by your own exertion or labor?

Nothing.

15. What property, real or personal, or income do you have or possess, and its gross value?

16. What property, real of personal, did you possess at the death of your husband or he left you, and of the years 1899, 1900, 1901, 1902, 1903, 1904, and what disposition, if any, by sale or gift, have you made of same?

17. In what counties did you reside in 1899, 1900, 1901, 1902, 1903, and 1904, and what property did you return for taxation?

Banks.

18. How have you been supported since death of husband, and especially for years 1899, 1900, 1901, 1902, 1903 and 1904?

By my married sons.

19. How much did your support cost for each of those years, and how much did you contribute by your own labor or income?

Fifty or sixty dollars.

20.  What was your employment during 1899, 1900, 1901, 1902 and 1903-how much did you receive each year?

I was unable to do anything.

21. Have you a family?  If so, who comprises such family?  Give their means of support?  Have they any lands or other property?

No family.

22. Have you ever made application for pension before?

I have not.

23. How many applications have you made for a pension, and under what class?

I have never made.

J. T. Rogers, C. Strickland, E. H. Ingram, of said State and County, having been presented at a witness in support of the application of Mrs. N. G. Bolton for a Pension under Act of [blank] 1900, and after being duly sworn true answers to make to the following questions, deposes and answers as follows:

1. What is your name and where do you reside?

J. T. Rogers, C. Strickland & E. H. Embry [Ingram]  Banks county & J. T. Rogers who lives in Jackson county.

2. Are you acquainted with the applicant, Mrs. N. G. Bolton?  If so, how long have you known her?

We have known her forty years.

3. Where does she reside, and how long and since when has she been a resident of said State?

She resides in Banks County, there forty years, ever since the war.

4. Where and when was she born?

Before us in Oglethorpe county, Ga.

5. Were you acquainted with her husband?

Yes.

6.  Where did he reside in 1861?

In Banks county, Ga.

7.  When and to whom was he married?

E. F. Bolton was married to N. G. Johnson Dec. 22nd 1853.

8. When and where was he born?

Born before us in Oglethorpe county, Ga.

9. How long have you known him?

Since before the war and during & since the war.

10.  When and where did E. F. Bolton enlist in the war between the States, and in what Company and Regiment did he enlist, and how do you know this?

13th day of May 1862 at Jefferson, Ga., in Co. E 34 Georgia Regiment.

11. Were you a member of the same Company and Regiment?

We were.

12. How long did he perform regular military duty?

Until the 31st day of August 1864 when he was wounded in both legs at the battle of Jonesborough.

13. When and where was the Company and Regiment surrendered and discharged from service?

On 26th day of April 1865 at Greensborough, N. C.

14. Were you with the Command when it surrendered?

Yes.

15. Was E. F. Bolton the husband of the deceased applicant present?

No.  He was wounded in both legs as stated and could not attend.

16. If not present, where was he?

He was at home wounded.

17. When and where did he leave his command?

He was carried to hospital at Jonesborough, Ga., 31st day of August 1864.

By whose authority did he leave his command?

He required no authority as he was left on battlefield wounded.

How do you know all this? (State fully and clearly.)

We were present at the time and were life witnesses as to leaving him on battlefield wounded.

18. When and where did E. F. Bolton die?

He died 15th day Dec. 1905 at his home in Banks County, Ga.

19. Where did he reside at his death and how long had he been a resident of Georgia at his death?

He resided in Banks County and had lived here all his life.

20. Do you of your own knowledge know that applicant is the lawful widow of E. F. Bolton?

We do.  We have known them for over forty years.

21. Has she remarried since her soldier husband’s death, and is now his widow?

She has remained a widow since the death of her husband.

22. What property, effects or income, has the applicant, if any, and do you know of your own knowledge?

She has nothing except a small amount of household goods.

23. What property, effects or income die the applicant possess in 1899, 1900, 1901, 1902 and 1903, and what disposition did she make of it?

Nothing.

24. Has applicant conveyed any property in last two years or given any away.  If so, what was it and to whom?

No.

25. What is applicant’s physical condition and her chances and ability to earn a support?

She is very old.  Her condition is such that she can do not sort of labor.  She has bronchitis, heart trouble, constipation and is broken down.

26. Is applicant able to earn a support by any kind of labor?

She is not able to earn a support by any kind of labor.

27. How was she supported for years 1899, 1900, 1901, 1902 and 1903?

By her married sons.

28. How much did applicant contribute to her support for those years?

Nothing.

29. Give and full and complete description of applicant’s physical condition?

She is very old and decrepit.  She has bronchitis, constipation and heart troubles and generally broken down.  She can do no work.

30. What interest have you in the recovery of this pension by the applicant?

None whatsoever.

Affidavits of Physicians.

 

State of Georgia,

[Blank] County.

Personally before me comes W. P. Harden M. D. and J. D. Rice M. D., both known to me to be reputable physicians of said County, who, being severally sworn, day on oath that they have carefully examined Mrs. Nancy G. Bolton, applicant for said Pension under act of 1900, and after said personal examination say that her physical condition is this

She has Chronic Bronchitis and Chronic Constipation, Chronic Emphazemia, Dilation of Heart,  She has Lumbago.  These together render her unable to earn a support by labor of any calling whatever

and we have no interest in said pension, if allowed.
