Confederate Pension Application of James C. Broom

 

Questions for Applicant

State of Georgia

Banks County.

James C. Broom of said State and County, desiring to avail himself of the Pension Act approved December 15th, 1894, hereby submits his proofs, and after being duly sworn true answers to make to the following questions, deposes and answers as follows:

1. What is your name and where do you reside? (Give State, County and post office.)

James C. Broom.  Banks County, Ga.  Hollingsworth, Ga.

2. Where did you reside on January 1st, 1894, and how long have you been a resident of this State?

In Banks about forty years.

3. When and where were your born?

In Anderson County, South Carolina.

4. Did you volunteer in the Confederate Army or in the Georgia Militia?

Confederate.

5. When and where did you enlist?

In Banks County Ga.

6. In what company and regiment did you enlist?

In Company D 43 Ga.

7. How long did you remain in that company and regiment?

From March until December.

8. If you were discharged from same and joined another, or if you were transferred to another, give an account of such discharge or transfer?

I was discharged and afterwards joined State Troops.

9. For how long a period of time did you discharge regular military duty?

From 2nd day of March.

10. When, where and under what circumstances were you discharged from service?

Until sometime in December.  At Lenoir Station, Tennessee & discharged because I had chronic rheumatism.

11. What is your present occupation?

Farmer.

12. How much can you earn per annum by your own exertions or labor?

Very little of anything.

13. What has been your occupation since 1865?

Farmer.

14. What sum would be necessary for your support for this pension year, and how much are you able to contribute thereto either in labor or income?

One hundred dollars.  Almost nothing.

15. What is your present physical condition and how long have you been in such condition?

I am very old and unable to do enykind [any kind] of work.  Too feeble and almost blind.  I was born in 1814.

16. Upon which of the following grounds do you base your application for pension, viz: first, “age and poverty,” second, “infirmity and poverty” or third “blindness and poverty”?

Infirmity and poverty.

17. If upon the first ground, state how long and you have been in such condition that you could not earn your support?  If upon the second, give a full and complete history of the infirmity and its extent?  If upon the third state whether you are totally blind and when and where you lost your sight?

I base my claim on age and infirmity & blindness-I am almost blind, been allmost [sic] blind for the last six months.

18. What property, effects or income do you possess?

None.

19. What property, effects of income did you possess in 1893 and in 1894 and what dispostion, if any did you make of same?

None.

20. In what County did you reside during those years and what property did you return for taxation?

In Banks & did not return any property.

21. How were you supported during the years 1893 and 1894?

I attended a Mill but quit it on account of my infirmity.

22. How much did your support cost for each of those years, and what portion did you contribute thereto by your own labor or income?

About fifty dollars.  I received my first of the tole [toll]  from the Mill.

23. What was your employment during 1893 and 1894?  What pay did you receive in each year?

I kept a Mill.  About fifty dollars.

24. Are you married and have you a family?  If so, is your wife living and how many children have you?  Give age and sex of children and their means of support?

I am married & have family.  Wife is living.  Have 9 children, 5 boys ages 60-40-38-36-34, four girls ages 52-50-49-31 years old.

25. Are you receiving a pension under any law of this State, if so what amount and for what disability?

None.

Questions for Witness

State of Georgia

Banks County.

Dean Brady, of said State and County, having been presented as a witness in support of the application of James C. Broom for pension under the Act approved December 15th, 1894, and after being duly sworn true answers to make to the following questions, deposes and answers as follows:

1. What is your name and where do you reside?

Dean Brady, in Banks County.

2. Are you acquainted with James C. Broom, the applicant, if so how long have you known him?

Yes, about forty years.

3. Where does he reside, and how long has he been a resident of this State?

In Banks County, and about [remainder left blank].

4. Do you know of his having served in the Confederate Army or the Georgia Militia? How do you know this?

Served with him in the Confederate Army,  Company D 43 Ga. Regt.

5. When, where and in what company and regiment did he enlist?

He enlist [sic] in Company D 43 Ga. Reg. Banks Co. Ga.

6. Were you a member of the same company and regiment?

Yes.

7. How long did he perform regular military duty, and what do you know of his service as a Confederate soldier, and the time and circumstances of his discharge from the service?

About 9 months & he was good soldier & was discharged on account of his rheumatism.

8. What property, effects or income has the applicant? (Give your means of knowledge.)

He has no property as I live near to him & know this to be true.

9. What property, effects or income did the applicant possess in 1893 and 1894, and what disposition, if any, did he make of the same?

He had no property 1893 & 1894 & has not disposed of any.

10. What is the applicant’s occupation and physical condition?

He is a Farmer and about 81 or 82 years old & almost blind & very feeble from old age and Rheumatism.

11. Is the applicant unable to support himself by labor of any sort, if so, why?

He is unable to support himself because of his age, blindness & disease.

12. How was he supported during the years 1893 and 1894?  He kept a Mill & the tole [toll] supported him as he as no other means.

13. What portion of his support for these two years was derived from his own labor or income?

Some of it was by keeping a Mill.

14. Give a full and complete statement of the applicant’s physical condition that entitles him to a pension under the Act of December 15th, 1894?

Mr. Broom is very old & feeble & almost blind & suffers with Rheumatism.

15. What interest have you in the recovery of a pension by this applicant?

None.

Note-James C. Broom, Jan. 12, 1812-Feb. 5, 1903, is buried at the Ausburn Cemetery in Banks County.  His wife, Amanda, born April 22, 1813-Oct. 15, 1895, is buried there also.  Reference: Cemeteries and Deaths in Banks County, Georgia by Richard J. Chamber.
