Confederate Widow’s Pension Application of Nancy Cantrell.

 

Affidavit to be Made by the Widow.

 

State of Georgia,

County of Banks.

In person before, the undersigned Ordinary in and for the County of Banks, Mrs. Nancy Cantrell, who being sworn according to law, says under oath that she is the widow of K. C. Cantrell, who was a soldier in the service of the Confederate States, and served as a member of Company C, of the 52 Regiment of Ga. Volunteers; that he enlisted in said service on or about the 4th day of March 1862, and was in the Confederate Army up to April 1864.  That while in the Army, he was on the [blank] day of [blank] 186_,

“He took fever while on the retreat from Dalton, Ga. to Atlanta, Ga., in 1864 from overheat & exposure which relapsed, settled upon his lungs causing hemorhage [sic] of the lungs which continued until his death.  He never was able to do any manual labor from the time he came home until his death which was on the 27 day of Jan. 1880.”

Deponent further swears that she was the wife of the said deceased soldier during his term of service in the Army, and that she has never married since his death; that she became his wife on the 17th day of Dec. 18[inksplotch], and that she has resided in Georgia continuously since the [blank] day of Dec. 1831; that Georgia is her home, and was such on the 23d day of December, 1890, and since said date she has not lived in any other State or locality.  Deponent, as the widow of said deceased soldier husband, applies for the pension provided by the Act of the General Assembly of Georgia, approved December 23d, 1890, for the pension year ending February 15th, 1895, and herewith tenders her proof of the right to receive the allowance granted by said Act.

Power of Attorney.

 

State of Georgia,

Banks County.

Know all Men by These Presents, That I, Nancy Cantrell of Banks County, in said State, do hereby appoint J. N. Coggins of [blank] my true and lawful attorney in fact, for me and in my name, to receive and receipt for whatever amount I many be entitled to from the State of Georgia as a widow of a Confederate Soldier, as stated in the foregoing affidavit; hereby authorizing my said Attorney to receipt in my name for any Warrant that may be issued by the Governor, or for any sum of money which may be coming to me for the reason aforesaid.

In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal, this the 8th day of Feb. 1896.

County of Banks

 

Personally comes Mrs. Nancy Cantrell who, being sworn on oath, that she is a bona fide resident of said County of Banks, State of Georgia, and that she has resided in said State continuously since her birth.  That she is the Widow of K. C. Cantrell who was a soldier in Company C of the 52 Regiment of Georgia Volunteers, that he enlisted in said regiment on or about the month of March 1862, and served in the Army up to 1865.  That he lost his life on the 27th day of January 1880. (Additional space regarding particulars of his death are left blank.)

Deponent further swears that she was the wife of said deceased soldier, during his service in the Army as a soldier, and that she has never married since his death aforesaid, and that she became his wife in the year 1850.

 

I have been paid a pension as a resident of Banks County for the year ending December 31, 1903, and now apply for the pension provided by law for the year ending December 31, 1904.

I, T. F. Hill Ordinary of said County, certify that I am well acquainted with Mrs. Nancy Cantrell, who made the above affidavit and am satisfied that the facts therein stated are true, and I know she is the individual she represents herself to be, and that has continuously  resided in this State since the (blank) day of 1836.

Notes:  K. C. Cantrell was a member of Co. C 52nd Georgia Infantry Regiment (Stovall’s Brigade) from Lumpkin County, Georgia.  Census records show that he is also know as Kinch Cantrell and  Kinchen Cantrell.  K. C. Cantrell enlisted as a private in Co. C 52nd Georgia Infantry Regiment on March 25, 1862.  He transferred to Co. B 52nd Georgia Infantry Regiment on May 25, 1861.  Roll dated 31 December 1863, he last appears on file as present.  He died in 1880 of a lung ailment contracted while in Confederate Service.  I believe Mrs. Nancy Cantrell was formerly Nancy Etris of Lumpkin County, Georgia.  Nancy Cantrell, born 07 May1831 and died 04 April 1907, according to her tombstone, is buried at Pleasant Hill Cemetery off Pea Ridge Road on the Habersham County line with Hall County, Georgia.
