Application For Pension By A Soldier.

Questions For Applicant To Answer.

 

State of Georgia,

Banks County.

Personally before me comes W. B. Caudell of said State and County, and hereby applies for the pension allowed by the Act of 1910, as amended by the Act of 1919 and the Constitutional Amendment of 1920, and submits testimony to support the same and after being duly sworn true answers to make to the questions propounded, answers as follows, to-wit:

1. What is you name and where do you reside? (Give County and Post-Office.)

W. B. Caudell.  I reside in Banks County, P. O. Lula, Ga.

2. How long and since when have your been continuously, a bona fide resident citizen of the State of Georgia?

All my life, since 1846.

3. Did you enlist in the Army of the Confederate States, or in the organized militia of this State, from 1861 to 1865?

Army of the Confederate States.

4. When and where, and in what Company and Regiment did you enlist? (State arm and class of service, and give name of Colonel and Captain.)

Jan. 1st 1864, at Homer, Ga.  Cavalry Co. “A” 11th Ga. Regiment.  Colonel Mat [Madison] Bell, Captain Bush.

5. How long did you remain in the actual military service with said Company and Regiment? (Give date of discharge.)

Until surrender in April 1865.

6. When and where was your Company and Regiment surrendered or discharged from the Service?

April 1865-near Augusta, Ga.

7. Were you personally present with your Command when it was surrendered of discharged?

Yes

.8. If you were not actually present, state specifically and clearly where you were.

b. When did you leave the Command?

April 1865.

c. For what cause did you leave?

Surrender.

d. By whose authority did you leave?

Commander Col. Mat Bell & Capt. Bush.

[Questions e, f, g, h deal with a soldier’s absence at time of surrender and do not apply to this soldier.]

i. Were you captured by the enemy at any time?

No.

9. Are you drawing a pension of any amount from the State of Georgia, or any other State, or the United States?

No.

10. Have you ever applied for the Georgia Pension and had it refused?  If so, for what cause was it not allowed?

No.

State of Georgia,

Banks County.

I, W. M. Thomas, Ordinary of said County, certify that I know W. B. Caudell the applicant for pension; that he is the person he represents himself to be, and that he has been, continuously, a bona fide resident of said State since January 1st, 1920; that I also know J. R. Chambers, the witness, who swears to the service; that both of them are now residents of said County and were duly sworn by me before signing the foregoing affidavits, and that they are truthful and trustworthy and their statements are entitled to full faith and credit.

Notes:

 

William B. Caudell died on 4 May 1928 in Hall County, Ga., death certificate number 13279-J.

 

J. C. Hawkins of Hall county requested funds from the State to pay William B. Caudell’s final expenses.   Mr. Hawkins submitted an invoice dated 5 May 1928 from Hendrix & Laws, furniture, stoves, pianos, phonographs and records, funeral directors and embalming, of Gainesville, Ga., for a casket priced at $100.00 for the remains of William B. Caudell.
