Confederate Pension documents for James Morris, Co. D. 43rd Ga. Infantry Regiment

 

Questions for Applicant.

STATE OF GEORGIA,

Banks County

 

James Morris of said State and County, desiring to avail himself of the Pension Act approved December 15th, 1894, hereby submits his proofs, and after being duly sworn true answers to make  to the following questions, deposes and answers as follows;


1.         What is your name and where do you reside?  James Morris, Banks Co. Ga., Gillsville P. O.

2.         Where did you reside on January 1st, 1894, and how long have you been a resident of this State?  Banks Co. Ga., all my life.

3.         Where and when were you born?  14 Feb. 1827.  Habersham Co. Ga.

4.         When and where and in what company and regiment did you enlist or serve?  March 1862. Banks Co., Ga.  Co. D 43 Ga. Regt.

5.         How long did you remain in such company and regiment?  From March 1862 to April 1865.

6.         For how long a period did you discharge regular military duty?  2 years & 11 months.

7.         When, and under what circumstances were you discharged from service?  Greensborough, N. C. at surrender.

8.         What is your present occupation?  What little I can do farming.

9.         How much can you earn (gross) per annum by your own exertions or labor?  20 or 25 dollars.

10.       What has been your occupation since 1865?  Farming on rent land.

11.       Upon which of the following grounds do you base your application for pension, viz.: first “age and poverty”, second “infirmity and poverty”, or third “blindness and poverty”?  Infirmity & poverty.

12.       If upon the first ground, state how long you have been in such condition that you could not earn your support?  If upon the second, give a full and complete history of the infirmity and it’s extent?  If upon the third, state whether you are totally blind and when and where you lost your sight?  I have been suffering with rheumatism for twenty years in my back & limbs so that I could not work but very little.

13.       What  property, effects or income do you possess and its gross value?  1 cow & a little house hold furniture.  Worth $25.00 or $30.00.

14.       What property, effects or income did you possess in 1894, 1895 and 1896 and what disposition, if any, did you make of the same?  One cow & little house hold furniture.  I did not make any disposition of property.

15.       In what County did you reside during those years and what property did you return for taxation?  In Banks Co.  I returned one cow & house hold furniture.

16.       How were you supported during the years 1895 and 1896?  With the help of my family.

17.       How much did your support cost for each of those years, and what portion did you contribute thereto by your own labor and exertion?  I suppose $40.00 & contributed but little.

18.       What was your employment during 1895 and 1896? What pay did you receive in each year?  Trying to work on farm.  Nothing except we worked for.

19.       Have you a family?  If so, who composes such family?  Give their means of support?   Have they a homestead?  I have a wife & 6 children, 4 girls & 2 boys.  Oldest girl 16-no means except what we make on rent land.

20.       Are you receiving any pension, if so, what amount and for what disability?  None.

AFFIDAVIT OF PHYSICIANS

STATE OF GEORGIA

Banks County.

Personally came before me J. Sam Daniel and O. N. Harden, both known to me as reputable physicians of said county, who being severally sworn, say on oath that they have carefully examined_______________________________(blank), applicant for pension under the Act of 1894, and after such personal examination say that his precise physical condition is as follows:

We find this old man has chronic Rheumatism of long standing which affects his back very much, he’s ruptured on right side. (Inguinal hernia).  We have no hesitation in saying from his age & general condition he is not able to work.

We further say on oath that the physical condition of the applicant renders him unable to labor at any work or calling sufficient to earn a support for himself, and that we have no interest in said pension being allowed.

QUESTIONS FOR WITNESS

STATE OF GEORGIA

Banks County.

Jobe Brock, of said State and County, having been presented as a witness in support of the application of James Morris for pension under the Act approved December 15th, 1894, and being duly sworn true answers to make to the following questions, deposes and answers as follows:

1. What is your name and where do you reside?  Jobe Brock, Banks Co. Ga.

2. Are you acquainted with James Morris I am, the applicant, if so how long have you known him?  I have known him for forty years.

3. Where does he reside, and how long has he been a resident of this State?  In Banks County, all his life.

4. Do you know of his having served in the Confederate army or Georgia militia?  I do.  I served in the Confederate army with.

5. When , where and in what company and regiment did he enlist?  March, 1862.  Banks Co. Co. D 43 Ga. Regt.

6. Were you a member of the same company and regiment?  I was.

7. How long did he perform regular military duty, and what do you know of his service as a Confederate soldier, and the time and circumstances of his discharge from the service?  About 2 years & 11 months.  He made a good soldier.  He was surrendered at Greensborough N. C. April 26th 1865.

8. What property, effects or income has the applicant?  (Give your means of knowledge.)  He has nothing but a little house hold furniture & one cow.  I reside near him.

9. What property, effects or income did the applicant possess on 1895 and 1896, and what disposition, if any did he make of same?  The same house hold furniture & one Milch cow.  He has made no disposition of any.

10. What is the applicant’s occupation and physical condition?  He trys (sic) to work to make support.  He suffers a good deal with rheumatism.  Not able to work at times.

11. Is the applicant unable to support himself by labor of any sort, if so, why?  He is on account of his age, feeble condition & suffering with rheumatism.

12. How was he supported during the years 1895 and 1896?  By the family with what little he could earn.

13.  What portion of his support for these two years was derived from his own labor or income?  I do not suppose 18 dollars was earned from his own labor.

14. Give a full and complete statement of the applicant’s physical condition that entitles him to a pension under the Act of December 15th, 1894?  He suffers with rheumatism & feebleness and not able to do anything the most of his time.

15. What interest have you in the recovery of a pension by this applicant?  None.

I, Jas. Morris hereby authorize T. F. Hill of Homer Ga. To receive and receipt for the pension allowed and request that he remit the same to me at Homer by (blank).

Note: James Morris continued on the rolls of Indigent Soldiers’ Pensions in Banks County.  His last entry in the pension documents on microfilm was a declaration of Power of Attorney to T. F. Hill dated 10 January 1906.  His widow, Nancy Drucilla Morris, gave his death date as 10 April 1915 in her Widow’s Pension application.
