APPLICATION FOR PENSION DUE DECEASED SOLDIER BY MRS. R. V. MORRIS, WIDOW OF R. V. MORRIS OF GORDON COUNTY

State of Georgia, Gordon County.

 

Personally before me comes Mrs. R. V. Morris, of said county, after being duly sworn, on oath says that she is the widow of R. V. Morris, who was duly enrolled as an Indigent Pensioner from this county of Gordon and was paid a Pension of Sixty Dollars from Gordon county for 1907, and that she said that R. V. Morris died in Gordon county on the 30th day of November 1908, and at the time of his death a Pension of $15.00 was due him from Gordon county and unpaid for 1907.

 

Applicant further swears that she married R. V. Morris on the fourth day of February, 1854 in Hall county and State of Georgia and resided with him from the date of marriage to his death as his lawful wife, and is now his dependent widow, and she asks that the Pension so due and unpaid be paid to her.

AFFIDAVIT OF WITNESS

 

Georgia, Fulton County.

 

Personally before me comes Allen D. Candler, who on oath says he knew R. V. Morris while in life and that he knows his widow Mrs. Martha Morris, the above applicant; that he knows that the said R. V. and Martha Morris lived together as husband & wife prior to the War & was so living when he enlisted in the Army, returning after War ended-they continued to live together as husband and wife, and that they resided together as husband and wife from date of marriage to the day of his death on the 30th day of November 1908, and I know that she is his dependent widow-and he died in Gordon County-was on Indigent Pension Roll.

WIDOW'S AFFIDAVIT

 

State of Georgia

County of Gordon

 

Personally came before me Mrs. R. V. Morris who says on oath that she is the widow of R. V. Morris to whom. in the County of Banks State of Georgia she was married 8th day of February 1854, that she remained his wife up to the 30th day of November 1908, at which time he died, and that she has not since married.  At the time of his death he was a resident of Gordon County, in said State of Georgia, and was on the Indigent pension roll of the State of Georgia, having been allowed a pension of $60.00 per annum on account of being a soldier in Company H 24th Regiment, Georgia Volunteers.

 

What affliction have you and how does it affect you?  Rheumatism, a crippled hand due to a fall and those that usually result from old age.

 

What have you been doing to earn a support since 1st January, 1900? Have been supported by children and husband's pension.

 

What property or effects had you on 1st January, 1900?  Small home partially paid for.

 

What have you acquired since, and what income have you now?  Have not acquired anything since and have no income.

 

What disposition have you made of any property since 1st January, 1900, and at what price and for what purpose?  Sold home for $1100.00, which was used in payment of debts, burial expenses of husband etc.

 

Deponent further says she is now a resident of Gordon County, and has continuously resided in the State of Georgia since the 22nd day of April 1834.  She applies for the pension provided by the Act of the General Assembly approved December 18, 1901.

AFFIDAVIT FOR THREE WITNESSES

 

State of Georgia

County of Fulton

 

Personally came A. D. Candler and E. Morris known to me to be reputable and truthful person, who says on oath that from his personal knowledge Mrs. M. T. Morris who made the foregoing affidavit, is the widow oF R. V. Morris who died in Gordon County and State of Georgia on the 30th day of November 1908, and that she has not since married; that she became his wife on blank day 18_. A. D. Candler says that he does not know the date of marriage  but has knew them before the War they were residing toghether as husband and wife until his death and that she has resided in this State continuously all her life.

 

With what affliction does she suffer?  The infirmities of old age.

 

What property or income had she on 1st January, 1900? None.

 

What has she in her possession and control now? None.

 

How was she supported in 1900 and 1901?  Husband and children.

 

I have no personal interest in the pension asked for.

PHYSICIANS' AFFIDAVIT

Personally came before me Drs. E. O. Shellhorse and J. M. Erwin, both of whom are known to me to be reputable physicians, who on say on oath that they personally know M. T. Morris mentioned in the foregoing affidavit, that she is personally afflicted (state disease and how it prevents her from earning a support)...Rheumatism, a crippled hand due to a fall and old age.

No further pension record beyond 1909 although other family documents indicate Martha Morris received a pension through 1914.

 

Martha Terrell Waters Morris was the daughter of John Waters and Oneida Terrell.  She and Richard Venable Morris are buried in Gordon County, Georgia at Shiloh Methodist Church Cemetery. (GNIS Latitude 342857N and Longitude 0844210W)

 

A payment of $36.50 in 1914 for a casket and robe for "Mama" was listed in the settlement of Richard V. Morris' estate.
