Confederate Pension Application for Elijah Nix

Banks County.

 

Elijah Knix [sic] of said State and County, desiring to avail himself of the Pension Act approved December 15th, 1894, hereby submits his proofs, and after being duly sworn true answers to make to the following questions, deposes and answers as follows:

 

1. What is your name and where do you reside? (Give State, County and post office.)

Elijah Knix [Elijah Nix] and live in Banks Co. at Lula (?) Ga.

2. Where did you reside on January 1st, 1894, and how long have you been a resident of this State?

In 1894 lived in Banks Co.  Lived in this State since the year 1881.

3. When and where were you born?

Born 7th Sept. 1834.  In South Carolina.

4. When and where and in what company and regiment did you enlist or serve?

Enlisted 16th Nov. 1861 at Greenville S. C., Co. G 16th Regt. S. C.

5. How long did you remain in such company and regiment?

Served until the surrender in 1865 of the Confederate Army.

6. For how long a period of time did you discharge your military duty?

Three years and five months.

7. When, and where and under what circumstances were you discharged from service?

April 1865-16th of April was honorably discharged in account of the surrender.

8. What is your present occupation?

Farmer.

9. How much can you earn (gross) per annum by your own exertions or labor?

None.

10. What has been your occupation since 1865?

Trying to farm.

11. Upon which of the following grounds do you base your application for pension, viz.: first, “age and poverty,” second, “infirmity and poverty or third “blindness and poverty”?

Infirmity and poverty.

12. If upon the first ground, state how long you have been in such a condition that you could not earn your support?  If upon the second, give a full and complete history of the infirmity and its extent?  If upon the third, state whether you are totally blind and when and where you lost your sight?

Has had a spinal tremble ever since the war of 1861 but has grown worse for the past few years.

13. What property, effects or income do you possess and its gross value?

Small amount of household and kitchen furniture value of $15.00.

14. What property, effects or income did you possess in 1894, 1895 and 1896 and what disposition, if any, did you make of same?

Household and kitchen furniture value of $15.00.  In 1894-1895 had bought a mule but only paid $5.00 on the note, and delivered the mule to the vendor.

15. In what County did you reside during those years and what property did you then return for taxation?

Resided in Banks County and returned $50.00 including the mule.

16. How were you supported during those years and what property did you return for taxation?

By my children.

17. How much did your support cost for each of those years, and what portion did you contribute thereto by your own labor or income?

From $50.00 to $70.00 and contributed nothing.

18. What was your employment during 1895 and 1896?  What pay did you receive in each year?

Did nothing but advise my children and from them got a support.

19. Have you a family?  If so, who composes such family?  Give their means of support?   Have they a homestead?

Have a wife and two children.  They all work in the field for mine and their support.

20. Are you receiving any pension, if so, what amount and for what disability?

None.

Note-The 1900 Census for Habersham County, Ga., shows Elijah Nix, Occupation-“Pensioner”, living in Alto, Mud Creek District.  In 1910 Elijah Nix is a widower and living in Jackson County, Clarksboro District.
