Confederate Widow’s Application of Sarah E. Nunnally

Application for Pension by a Widow under Act of 1910- Questions for Applicant.

State of Georgia

Banks County.

Personally before me comes Sarah E. Nunnally of said State and County, and after being duly sworn, on oath says that she desires to apply for a pension allowed under the Act of [blank] 1910, and submit testimony to make out the same, true answers makes to, the following questions to wit:

1. What is your name and where do you reside?

Sarah E. Nunnally.  Banks County Ga.

2. How long and since when have you been a continuing resident in the State of Georgia?

Since 1851.

3. When, where and to whom were you married?

13th day of June 1866, W. J. Nunnally.

4. When, where and in what Company and Regiment did your husband enlist as a soldier in Confederate Army or Georgia Militia? (State the arm and class of service.)

March, 1861.  Co. D. 43rd Georgia Regiment Voluntarily. [perhaps it is meant as “Volunteers”)

5. When and where did the Commands of your husband surrender or discharge from the army?

26 of April 1865, at Greensboro, N. C.

6. Was your husband personally present at the time of surrender or discharge of this Command?

Was sick with measles which settled in his leg from which he never recovered, and got a furlough at Vicksburg, Miss. 1863, and was sent to Meridian Miss.

7. If he was not present state clearly where he was?

Maridian [sic] Miss.

8. Where was his Command when he left?

Vicksburg, Miss.

8a. For what cause did he leave his command?

From the relapse of Measles.

8b. By whose authority did he leave his Command?

Col. Skid Harris.

8c. How long was he granted leave of absence?

Don’t remember.

8e. [There is no 8d.] What was his physical condition when he left his Command?

Very feeble.

8f. What effort did he make to return to his command?

Never was able to go back.

8g. In what way was he prevented from going back to Command?

Not able.

8h. Was he captured by the enemy at any time?

No.

8i. If so, when and where captured and where held a prisoner, and when and for what cause released? [Blank]

8j. When and where did your husband die?

Feb. 25 1910-in Banks County.

8k. Were you residing together when he died?

Yes.

8l. If not, how long had you resided apart? [blank]

9. What property of any description did you own, hold or control for your use and its cash value, Nov. 4, 1908. (State name by items.)

30 acres mountain land, 300.00 dollars.

10. What property of any kind have you sold or given away since Nov. 4, 1908? What was received for it and what did you do with the proceeds thereof? (Give items and cash value.)

None.

11. What property of any description of any value have you now?

None at present.

12. What are your annual earnings or income and their value?

Just what little I make myself.  Cannot rent my land.

13. Have you heretofore been paid a pension by the State?

No.

Note-Sarah E. Nunnally is buried in the old cemetery at Line Baptist Church in Banks County, Ga., beside her husband, William J. Nunnally.  Her stone shows a birth date of  July 4, 1846 (source: “Cemeteries and Deaths in Banks County, Georgia” by Richard J. Chambers) and there is no death date listed.  Sarah E. Nunnally was last enumerated in the 1920 Banks County Census.
