Regiment of Georgia Volunteers, that he enlisted in said service on or about
the 12 day of May 1862, and was in the Army of the Confederate States up to the
20 May 1865. That while in the Army, he
was on the about last day of May 1862, “he was vaccinated, which caused blood
poison and his arm rotted off and caused his death. That Joseph Parsons was a most able bodied man prior to Service. He was vaccinated to prevent danger by Small
Pox while at Big Shanty, Georgia, in 1862, which caused a blood poison of left
arm, and created a Sore on the left arm.
Which grew worse from the time he was discharged at the close of War in
1865. The Sore continued from the time
he came home in 1865 on up to his death July 17 1896. The Sore got so bad he had to carry his arm in a sling and it
rotted off all round the arm and the bones & sinews were all naked and the
Sore got extended up in his Shoulder and breast which caused his death; he was
treated by 5 or 6 Doctors but they could not give him any relief.”
And was honorably discharged
