Mad Stones Discussed

The Constitution, Atlanta, Georgia, Thursday May 24, 1888

Bold Spring, May 24-

A few words about mad stones. It is said that these mad stones are found only in the stomachs of very old deer, and are not found in every old deer, but are never found in a young deer.

Last Saturday I saw a so called mad stone for the first time. It had the appearance of agate, smooth and highly polished, somewhat oval in shape and slightly flattened, weighing about an ounce. The stone was taken from the maw of a very old doe, about sixty years ago, on the farm of Esquire John Chambers about four miles northwest of Homer, Banks county, Georgia, and is now in the possession of his son, John E. Chambers, of Homer, who says that he saw the stone taken from the deer' s maw, and who also says that any person bitten by a mad dog is welcome to the use of the stone. Being skeptical as to their power, I would be glad to see this stone in use.
