CARTLEDGE, Rev. G.H.

Death of Rev. G. H. Cartledge

A Prominent Presbyterian Preacher of Georgia.

Filled Pulpits Continuously for Fifty Years-Taught Governor Allen D. Candler.

The Constitution, Atlanta, Ga., July 5, 1899.

Harmony Grove, Ga., July 5-

Rev. Groves H. Cartledge, a prominent and pious Presbyterian preacher of Franklin county, died this morning at 6 oclock. This sad intelligence will be sorrowfully received by the many friends and parishioners of the deceased throughout the state.

Mr. Cartledge was one of the most eminent divines throughout the south, and it is doubtful if he had an equal, and certainly not a superior, anywhere in his knowledge of the Bible. He was Father in Israel to the large flocks composing several churches of which he held charge before his sickness, and they mourn his loss deeply. He was a pastor continuously for nearly fifty years of the Presbyterian church at Hebron and had also several other churches throughout this section for a long number of years. Under his preaching thousands have been converted to Christ for eternity. In his death the Presbyterian church suffered an almost irreparable loss.

The deceased was not only a prominent preacher, but also took a high stock as an educator, and it was under him that our present governor, Allen D. Candler, received part of his education.

The funeral will occur tomorrow morning at 11 oclock at Hebron church, and will be conducted by his lifelong friend and co-worker, Rev. Henry F. Hoyt, of this place.
