Christine English Sarulis, 88, of Westland, Mich., formerly of Baldwin, died Saturday at a private care facility following an extended illness.

Born in Baldwin to the late Joseph F. and Maude Ayers English, she retired from General Motors Corp. and was a member of the Church of Christ. She also was preceded in death by her husband, John J. Sarulis.

Graveside services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 14, 2006, at Baldwin Cemetery. Those wishing to attend should gather by 1:45 p.m. Thursday at the grave.

SAVAGE, Otis

MT. AIRY, Ga. - Otis Savage, 87, of Mt. Airy, died Thursday, April 21, 2005, at his home.

Born in Banks County on March 2, 1918, he was the son of the late Jay Tyrus and Ida Jane Greenway Savage. He was an U.S. Army veteran having served during World War II. He was a retired supervisor with H.W. Ivey Construction and an avid woodworker. He was a lifetime member of V.F.W. Post #7720 and a member of B.C. Grant Baptist Church.

Surviving are widow, Lulah Jones Savage of Mt. Airy; daughters, Mary Jo Lalonde of Mt. Airy and Jennifer Taylor of Baldwin; sons, Jerry Savage of Mt. Airy and J.B. Savage of Maysville; brother, Harold Savage of Simpsonville, S.C.; sister, Mildred Davidson of Cornelia; 10 grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren.

Services are at 2 p.m. Sunday at McGahee-Griffin & Stewart Funeral Home, Cornelia by the Revs. John Cooley and Doyle Conley; burial will be in Yonah Memorial Gardens with full Military Honors provided by Habersham County American Legion Post 84 & Rabun County D.A.V. Chapter #15. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

JOHN H. SCOGGINS LAID TO FINAL REST.

Commerce, Ga., September 5- John H. Scoggins, 79 years of age, prominent planter of Banks county, passed away Saturday night. His funeral was preached by Reverend J. F. Goode, a prominent Baptist minister of Carnesville, Ga., the internment following in Gray Hill cemetery in this place Monday evening. Mr. Scoggins had long been one of the most prominent and prosperous citizens of Banks county. His passing will be mourned by his hundreds of friends.

Della Ledford Sears, 89, of Cleveland died Saturday at Limestone Heritage Retirement Home, Gainesville.

Born in Banks County to William Ledford and Carrie Moore Ledford, she also was preceded in death by her husband, J.C. Sears; brothers, Roscoe Ledford, Oscar Ledford and Lonnie Ledford; sisters, Ruth Cogdell and Stella Hudson English; and one grandson.

Survivors include her sons, James Sears, Gastonia, N.C., and Ken Sears, Sarasota, Fla.; daughters, Doris Walden, Dawsonville, and Wanda Kay Freed, Cleveland; brother, John Ledford, Toccoa; four grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Memorial services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, July 29, 2006, at Alexander's Gateway Chapel Funeral Home. The Rev. Jimmy Sargent will officiate.

Commerce, Ga., October 9- J. M. SEGARS died this morning at his home near Banksville, in Banks county, at the age of 76 years. He was one of the most widely known and generally beloved men in the county. His remains will be interred at New Salem church tomorrow with religious services conducted by Revs. H. C. Emory and J. J. Pendergrass.

Nancy Grace (Bell) Segars, age 89, of New Holland passed away Sunday, Feb. 4, 2007, at her residence following an extended illness.

Funeral services are scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2007, in the chapel of Memorial Park Funeral Home, with burial to follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. The Rev. Robert Nix will officiate. The family will receive friends from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday, Feb. 5, 2007, at the funeral home.

Mrs. Segars was born in Banks County to the late William Henry Bell and Nancy Roberts Bell. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Jody Segars. Mrs. Segars was a charter member of Eastview Baptist Church and also a charter member of East Hall Baptist Church, where she was very active before her declining health.

Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Betty Jo and Richard Wilson, Gainesville, Aline and Donald Meeks, Gillsville, and Elizabeth and Doyle McQueen, Gillsville; sons and daughters-in-law, Joel and Glenda Segars, Gainesville, and Donald and Bonnie Segars, Jefferson; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; one brother-in-law; several sisters-in-law; and a number of nieces and nephews.

L. T. Shubert Dies Monday in Local Hospital

Lavender Tal Shubert, 77, retired farmer of Homer, died Monday in the Commerce Hospital following a short illness.

He was born in Habersham County on March 7, 1880, and was a member of the Silver Shoals Baptist Church.

Funeral services were held at 3 o'clock Tuesday afternoon after the body had lain in state for 30 minutes in the Homer Presbyterian Church, Dr. W.S. Beardshaw, officiating. Interment was in the churchyard.

Little - Ward Funeral Directors were in charge of arrangements.

In addition to his wife, Mrs. Laura Hill Shubert, he is survived by four stepchildren, Mrs. Grover Ray, of Johnson City, Tenn; Mrs. Will Mason, Mrs. Harve Brown, Ira Chambers, and Mrs. Rob Ash, of Homer; and three brothers, Carnal Shubert, of Route 1, Commerce; Johnny Shubert, of Route 2, Commerce; and Carter Shubert, of Route 1, Homer.

Coy Simmons, 81, of Baldwin died Thursday following an extended illness.

Born in Banks County to the late Garnett Simmons and Ina Eller, he was retired from Cornelia Veneer Company and was of the Holiness faith. He also was preceded in death by two sisters.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Simmons, Baldwin; daughter, Sharon Allen, Alto; sons, Danny Simmons, Demorest, and Lynn Simmons, Alto; sister, Reba Zimmerman, Clarkesville; brothers, Reece Simmons, Baldwin, Roy Simmons, Habersham, and Clyde Simmons, Clarkesville; and five grandchildren.

Edwin Simmons, 72, of Toccoa died Saturday at his residence following a sudden illness.

Born in Banks County to the late Oscar and Bessie Broome Simmons, he was retired from the U.S. Navy and a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He was a member of VFW Post 4346 and Leatherwood Baptist Church. He also was preceded in death by his brothers, Guy Simmons, Amos Simmons and Illious Simmons.

Survivors include his sisters, Gwynne Clark, Cornelia, and Catherine Rice, Cleveland.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Jack Carlman Simmons Sr., 64, of Tanners Mill Road, Gainesville, passed away Saturday, Dec. 23, 2006, at his residence following an extended illness.

Funeral services are scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2006, at the chapel of Memorial Park Funeral Home. The Rev. Luther Williams will officiate. Interment will follow at Hopewell United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family received friends Sunday, Dec. 24, 2006, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., and they will receive friends Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Mr. Simmons was born in Banks County to the late Verse Carlman Simmons. He lived in Hall County most of his life. He was employed by Triton Industries and moved heavy equipment. If it had a steering wheel or stick, he could drive it. He loved all animals and rescued many. He was a great father and a loving husband who delighted in spoiling his grandchildren. He worked hard and enjoyed it. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Simmons, and son, Johnny Simmons.

SISK, Elizabeth M. "Cotton"

LULA ' Elizabeth M. ' Cotton' Sisk, 84, died Thursday, May 21, 2009, following an extended illness.

Born on January 27, 1925, in Banks County, she was the daughter of the late Nando and Lizzie Westbrook Cotton and was the last of 15 children. She lived in Hall County for 51 years and retired from Leece-Neville with 28 years of service. Mrs. Sisk was preceded in death by her husband, William Sisk; and a number of brothers and sisters.

Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Vanissa and Donald Carver, Flowery Branch, and Bonnie and Grady Smith, Lula; sons and daughters-in-law, Clayton and Pam Sisk and Randy and Alisa Sisk, all of Gainesville, Scottye and Pat Sisk, Flowery Branch; 13 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 23, at 11 a.m., in the chapel of Memorial Park Funeral Home with the Revs. David Matthews and Hugh Hubbard officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday, May 22, from 6 to 9 p.m.

Buford Smith, age 84, of Cornelia died Monday, Sept. 4, 2006, at Habersham County Medical Center.

Mr. Smith was born Dec. 9, 1921, in Banks County to the late William J. and Lucy Smith. He also was preceded in death by four sisters; three brothers; and foster parents, Emory and Minnie Brady Lawrence. Mr. Smith was a member and a deacon of Camp Creek Baptist Church, as well as the official church greeter for a number of years. He was a U.S. Army World War II veteran and was a retired employee of Ethicon with 40 years of service. Mr. Smith currently was employed with Quality Foods.

Survivors include his wife, Lucille Chitwood Smith, Cornelia; sons, Buford Lynn Smith, Mount Airy, and Daniel Jerome Smith, Athens; son and daughter-in-law, William Glenn and Carolyn Smith, Demorest; sisters, Gladys McCoy, Mount Airy, Christell Meeks, Cornelia; brothers, Bill Smith, Mount Airy, Harley Lawrence, Gainesville; six grandchildren, Chad Smith, Demorest, Deana Rider, Cleveland, Amanda Mitchell, Baldwin, Felicia Ward, Mount Airy, Angela Hogan, Atlanta, Maddy Anderson, Mount Airy; and seven great-grandchildren.

Clyde J. Smith, 89, of Brevard, N.C., formerly of Demorest, died Saturday at Ivy Hill Health and Retirement Center in Brevard.

Born in Banks County, he was a son of the late William Joseph Smith and Lucy Lela Ward Smith. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Opal Dyal Smith, and six siblings. He was a member of Demorest Church of God. He served in the CCC Camp in Basset, Va., and Coosbay, Ore., and was a U.S. Army World War II veteran. He retired as an inspector with Schnadig Co.

Survivors include his daughter, Barbara Whitlock, Brevard, N.C.: sons, Earl Smith, Demorest, Bruce Smith, Atlanta, and Lankford Smith, Melbourne, Fla.; sister, Gladys McCoy, Mount Airy; brothers, Buford Smith, Cornelia, and Billy Smith, Mount Airy; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

George Clayton Smith, age 85, of Baldwin died Saturday, April 15, 2006, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center.

Mr. Smith was born Dec. 24, 1920, in Banks County to the late Logan Sylvester Smith Sr. and Lena Stephens Smith. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Brown Smith; two brothers, Logan Sylvester (Happy) Smith Jr. and Bruce Coolidge Smith; and a sister, Isabel Smith Ervin. Mr. Smith was a retired educator with Lula Elementary, Banks County Elementary and High School, Baldwin Elementary and South Habersham Junior High, with a combined total of 30 years of dedicated service. He was a member of Broad River Baptist Church, deacon and Sunday school teacher. Mr. Smith was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He was a member of the Habersham Retired Educators Association and former columnist, writing "Country at Heart" for The Northeast Georgian.

Survivors include his children, Daniel James Smith, Central, S.C., Rebecca Smith Purcell, Mount Airy, Samuel Clayton Smith, Lynchburg, Va., and Phillip Mark Smith, Baldwin; two sisters, Annie Ruth Smith Wilbanks and Elizabeth Ostine Smith Wilbanks, both of Baldwin; grandchildren, Abigail, Caleb and Hanna Purcell, Kendra, Logan, Kayla and Haddon Smith and Jessica and Addison Smith.

Lizzie Maxwell Smith, age 89, of Alto died Saturday, Jan. 7, 2006, at a private nursing facility following a brief illness.

Born in Banks County on May 9, 1916, she was the daughter of the late Logan and Lizzie Stewart Maxwell. She is preceded in death by her husband, Joe Brown Smith; and sons, Clarence and Curtis Smith.

She was a homemaker who enjoyed gardening, canning and spending time with family. She was also a member of Mount View Baptist Church.

Surviving are sister, Martha Ferguson, Baldwin; grandchildren, Diane Smith Garrison, Trudy Smith Andrews, Karen Smith Lomax, Lynn Smith Dickerson, Milton Smith and Joe Smith. Also nine great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren survive.

Services are at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 9, 2006, at the B.C. Grant Baptist Church, with the Rev. Garry Garrison and the Rev. Doyal Conley officiating. Burial will follow in the Mount View Baptist Church Cemetery.

The body is at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday.

Born in Banks County to the late Charlie Massey and Camilla Massey, she was a member of Dewberry Baptist Church No. 2. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Charles E. Smith.

Smith was a man of fine ability and exalted personal worth. He served in the Georgia Legislature about the year 1859, from Towns county, and was a leader in the debates of that term. He was ardently devoted to the cause of the Confederacy, and raised a regiment early in the war. Billie Jurelle O'Kelley Sorrow, 80, of Maysville died Sunday at her residence.

Born in Banks County to the late Ethel Boswell O'Kelley and Isiah O'Kelley, she retired from Barrow Manufacturing Co. and was a member of Maysville Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Hilliard Sorrow, Maysville; daughter, Marie Hall, Maysville; brother, James O'Kelley, Maysville; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2006, at Maysville Baptist Church. The Rev. Brian Stowe and the Rev. Grady Jordan will officiate. Burial will be in Sunrise Cemetery.

Irene Anderson Sorrow, 69, of Commerce died Friday at Banks-Jackson-Commerce Nursing Home.

Born in Banks County to the late Carrie Mize Anderson and Charlie Anderson, she retired from Blue Bell and was a member of Mount Carmel Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Ambray Sorrow, Commerce; son, Jack Sorrow, Commerce; brothers, Q.D. Anderson, Homer, Swayne Anderson and Johnny Anderson, both of Commerce; sister, Aleene Sears, Homer; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Martha Evelyn Eubanks Stevens, 89, of Commerce died Sunday at Banks-Jackson-Commerce Medical Center.

A native of Banks County, she was the daughter of the late Martha Louisa McCoy Eubanks and Lunnie Frank Eubanks. She worked for Blue Bell Manufacturing as a sewing machine operator and was a member of Webbs Creek Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Oscar B. Stevens, Commerce; daughters, Ruby Fleeman, Shirley Willis and Aleene Kesler, all of Commerce, Pauline Hancock, Jefferson, and Johnnie Neterer, Goshen, Ind.; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 3, 2006, at Webbs Creek Baptist Church. The Rev. Hal Cason, the Rev. Bob Hill and the Rev. Wade Lott will officiate. Burial will be in Webbs Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

Dorothy Janelle Strange, 90, of Maysville died Monday at Banks-Jackson-Commerce Nursing Home.

Born in Banks County to the late Effie Sims Strange and John Wiley Strange, she was a civil service clerk with the federal government and a member of Maysville Baptist Church and First Baptist Church, Atlanta.

Survivors include her sister, Wilda Wells, Tampa, Fla.
