WADE, Geneva

Rev. Geneva Armour Wade, 69, of Alto, died Tuesday, July 4, 2006, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center, Gainesville, following a brief illness.

Born in Hall County on September 23, 1936, she was the daughter of the late Polly Waters Armour. Mrs. Wade was preceded in death by her husband, J.C. Wade; and a brother, Perry Armour.

Rev. Wade was the pastor of Pine Grove Holiness Church, in Alto, for 44 years. She was also a retired seamstress and a homemaker.

Survivors include a daughters and son-in-law, Jeanette Dodd, Alto, and Annette Wade and Mitchell Cook, Homer; two sons, Dennis Wade and Larry Wade, both of Alto; father, Leco Armour, Alto; brothers, Bennie Armour and L.J. Armour, both of Alto, and Ralph Armour, Cornelia; sisters, Imogene Wade, Demorest, Doris Jones, Patsy Armour and Linda Ferguson, all of Alto, Joy Dean Martin, Cornelia; three grandchildren, Cale Wade, Edena Bohannon and Keshia Dodd; one great-grandchild, Alex Nicholson; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, B.F. and Willette Wade; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Friday, July 7, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of McGahee-Griffin & Stewart Funeral Home with the Revs. Jacob Armour, David Tilson, and Lester Haynes officiating. Burial will be in the Wade Family Cemetery, with the Rev. Roger Corn officiating at the graveside.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, July 5, from 7 to 9 p.m., and Thursday, July 6, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

The family is at the residence of daughter, Jeanette Dodd, 191 C.M. Wilbanks Rd., Alto, Ga. 30510.

Died March 8, 2006

Joe Ward, 68, of Citra, Fla., died Wednesday.

He was born in Banks County and he moved to Florida from Cornelia in 1967. He was an auto body repairman and attended Living Waters Church of God. He was preceded in death by his father, Dorsey Ward.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Ward, Citra, Fla.; mother, Bertie Ward, Cornelia; daughter, Teresa Ward, Daytona, Fla.; sons, Terry Ward, Cornelia, and Tony Ward, Ocala, Fla.; sisters, Gladys Holland, Cornelia, and Barbara Bean, Toccoa; four grandsons; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday.

Funeral services are scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday, March 13, 2006, at Living Water Church. Burial will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 14, 2006 in Millwood Cemetery.

Ward

John William Ward, 85, well known resident of Stephens county, died early this morning at his home on the Mize road following an extended illness.

Mr. Ward was born September 28, 1870 in Banks county, son of the late Joe and Martha Savage Ward. He had made his home in Taccoa for the past 18 years, and was a member of the Toccoa Church of God.

Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Ada Cheek Ward, of the home; four sons, Enos and Everett Ward, both of Toccoa, Amos Ward of Commerce, and Edsel Ward of Thomasville, N.C.; four daughters, Mrs. Jesse Wood and Mrs. Gladys Moore of Toccoa, Mrs. George Free and Mrs. Lester Gordon, both of Thomasville, N.C.; one daughter in law, Mrs. Mildred Ward of Toccoa,; one brother Sam Ward of Spartanburg, SC, 28 grandchildren and 11 Great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at Calvary Baptist Church at 3:00 p.m. Sunday with the Rev. Ed Aiken, the Rev. Phillips and the Rev. H.C. Carpenter officiating.

Mrs. Malinda Ward, mother of J. G. Ward, died at the home of the latter near Arp, in Banks county, Sunday night after a long illness. She was 88 years of age. The burial was at Mount Pleasant church the day following, with religious services conducted by Revs. Singleton and Pendergrass.

Pauline Barrett Watkins, 85, of Cornelia died Monday at Banks-Jackson-Commerce Medical Center.

Born in Banks County to the late Arthur Barrett and Chalcy Jordan Barrett, she was retired from Chicopee Manufacturing and was a member of Level Grove Baptist Church. She also was preceded in death by her husband, John Watkins; and brothers, Floyd Barrett and Hansel Barrett.

Survivors include her son, Gerald Watkins, Cornelia; and a grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 8, 2007, at Level Grove Baptist Church, Cornelia. The Rev. Brian James and the Rev. Terry Rice will officiate. Burial will be in Yonah Memorial Gardens.

Esther Brewer Weese, 90, of Clarkesville died Monday at Doctor's Hospital in Augusta following an extended illness.

Born in Banks County to the late Buford and Dollie Greenway Brewer, she was a homemaker and member of Hollywood Baptist Church. She also was preceded in death by her husband, W.L. "Bill" Weese; son, Wallace Weese; four brothers; and one sister.

Survivors include her daughters, Twana Saunders, Sugar Hill, and Patti Duke, Harlem; son, William Larry Weese, Clarkesville; sisters, Jessie Fountain, Palmetto, Nell Clark, Douglasville, and Betty Jo Adamson, Oklahoma; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday and from noon to 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

MISS ANNIE WEHUNT PASSES AT COMMERCE.

Commerce, Ga.,- Miss Annue Mae Wehunt, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Wehunt, of Banks county, Georgia, died Friday from injuries received in an automobile accident which occurred August 13. Three of Miss Wehunt's ribs were broken in this accident, her spinal cord was severed, and several vertebrae were fractured, thereby inevitably producing death. The sympathies of a large circle of devoted friends as well as of the general public are extended to the bereaved family on account of Miss Annie Mae's untimely death.

Death of a Well-Known Teacher.

Carnesville, Ga., August 10- Professor Calvin B. WELD died at his home in Banks county yesterday at noon. No cause it being assigned for his death. It is reported here that he died from an overdose of opium as he sank into a swoon early in the day and never revived enough to talk, only to say that he took a dose at midnight and at day break. He gradually went down until death relieved him. He has been teaching in northeast Georgia for a number of years, having come south from New York fifty years ago.

ANDERSON, SC - Mr. R. L. Westbrook, age 86, husband of Ernestine Burden Westbrook, of 504 George Albert Lake Road, Anderson, SC, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Monday, October 17, 2005.

Born in Banks County, GA on July 3, 1919, Mr. Westbrook was a son of the late John Lee Westbrook and Mattie Henderson Westbrook. He was a retired Independent Contractor and served in the United States Army during World War II. He attended Central Presbyterian Church of Anderson, SC. Mr. Westbrook loved his family and friends.

In addition to his loving wife, he is survived by his daughter, Jan Healy and son, Phil Westbrook, both of Anderson, SC; two grandchildren, John Westbrook and Kelly Mullikin; a great-grandson, Jordan Mullikin; sisters, Frances Pruitt, Evelyn Smith and Ruth Lyles and a brother, Jimmy Westbrook.

A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, October 19, 2005 at 3:30 pm at New Silverbrook Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home on Tuesday, October 18, 2005 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.

Violet Brady Westbrooks, 77, of Carnesville died Wednesday at Banks-Jackson-Commerce Medical Center following a brief illness.

Born in Banks County to the late Will and Nancy Kelley Brady, she was a homemaker and a member of Union Hill Baptist Church. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Billy Joe Westbrooks; brother, Otha Brady; and sisters, Ola Ausburn, Florene Thompson and Marietta Hay.

Survivors include her daughter, Joyce Westbrooks Johnson, Kingsport, Tenn.; son, Ricky Westbrooks, Carnesville; brothers, Boyce Brady and Owen Brady, both of Baldwin; sister, Lilamay Pitts, Mount Airy; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Laura White, 103, of Homer, died Wednesday, May 11, 2005, at BJC Nursing Home, Commerce.

Born in Banks County, August 10, 1901, she was the daughter of the late James B. and Mary Jackson White. She was a member of Damascus Baptist Church.

Survivors include a sister, Agnes Hartgrove, Homer.

Funeral services were held Friday, May 13, at Damascus Baptist Church with the Revs. Roy Rogers and Gene Todd officiating. Burial was in Murray Family Cemetery, Homer.

Elwyn H. Wilbanks, 87, of Commerce died Wednesday at Athens Regional Medical Center.

A native of Banks County, he was the son of the late Lula Vaughn Wilbanks and Charlie Wilbanks. He was a veteran of World War II. He retired from Westinghouse and attended Cabin Creek Baptist Church. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Bertha Lee Massey Wilbanks.

Survivors include his son, Bobby Wilbanks, Commerce; daughters Patricia Dawson and Nancy Lee Wilbanks, both of Athens, and Sandra Wilbanks, Commerce; brothers, Cecil Wilbanks, Gainesville, and Grady Wilbanks, Commerce; sisters, Ruby Massey, Gainesville, Rozelle Hanley, Alnora Bone, and Callie Mae Hanley, all of Commerce; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Helen Imogene "Jean" Wilson, age 69, of Demorest died Thursday, June 9, 2005, at a local area hospital following a sudden illness.

Mrs. Wilson was born on Nov. 7, 1935, in Banks County to the late William R. and Cleo Fennell Sinnemon. She was also preceded in death by her son, William Darryl Wilson; and brother, Jerry Sinnemon. Mrs. Wilson was a member of the Demorest Church of God, and was a homemaker.

WILSON, Jackie Edward

Jackie Edward Wilson, age 58, of Lula died Thursday, Oct. 19, 2006, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center following an extended illness.

Born in Jackson County on Feb. 28, 1948, he was the son of the late H.A. Wilson. He was a U.S. Army veteran having served during Vietnam. He worked for Wilson Pottery all of his life. His passion was spending time with his grandchildren, family and friends and he was a member of Rock Springs Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Jane Stewart.

Surviving are his wife, Elaine Jordan Wilson of Lula; daughter and son-in-law, Paige and Chris Barnes of Clermont; son and daughter-in-law, Casey and Heather Wilson of Gainesville; mother, Monteen Skeltton Wilson of Lula; brothers, Wayne Wilson, Jimmy Wilson and Ricky Wilson, all of Lula; sister, Doris Hill of Cornelia; and granddaughters, Courtney Barnes and Christen Barnes.

Funeral services are 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 21, 2006, at Rock Springs Baptist Church with the Rev. Gary Wilson, the Rev. David Harbin and the Rev. Swayne Cochran officiating. Mrs. R. C. Wilson Dies Wednesday Near Commerce

Mrs. Lucy P. Wilson, 90, of Route 1, Commerce, widow of Richard C. Wilson, died Wednesday at the residence following a short illness.

She was born in Banks County on January 18, 1862, a daughter of the late Jim Pritchett, and the late Mrs. Mary Ayers Pritchett, and she was a member of the Webb's Creek Baptist Church.

Funeral services were held at 11 o'clock Friday morning from the Webb's Creek Baptist Church, the Rev. Bobby Jones, assisted by the Rev. Wade Lord, officiating. Interment was in the churchyard. Little-Ward Funeral Directors were in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Wilson is survived by eight sons, Ezra W. Wilson, of Palm Beach, Fla., Felton, William and Preston Wilson, of Atlanta, Paul Wilson, of Charlotte, N. WILSON, William Graves

Carnesville Herald - Unknown Date

On February 10, 1951, William Graves Wilson, 95, of Red Hill Community, one of Franklin County's oldest citizens, passed away.

A son of the late Rev. James Jackson Wilson and the late Mary Martin Wilson, he was born in Piercetown Community, Anderson County, SC on January 1, 1856. He moved to Banks County in 1864 with his family and lived there until January 1900, when he moved to Franklin County and had lived here until his death. He was married to Martha Elizabeth Payne in 1890 and she preceded him to the grave 35 years ago. He was a charter member of Webbs Creek Baptist Church and at the time of his death, was a member of Cross Roads Baptist Church in Carnesville. Farming was his vocation and he also owned a corn/grist mill. An unusually large concourse of friends and relatives attended the funeral from the surrounding counties of Georgia and South Carolina.

Funeral services were held from Cross Roads Baptist Church, Sunday afternoon, February 11th with the Rev. E. H. Collins of Winder officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Members of Carnesville Lodge # 186, Free and Accepted Masons served as active and honorary pallbearers.

Surviving are his 9 children: Rev. Garnet F. Wilson, Mrs. Fred (Mae Bell) Randall, Miss Mary Dell Wilson, Miss Ruth Wilson, Wister Wilson, Horace Wilson, Thomas Wilson, Mrs. Bryan (Jessie) Ayers, Mrs. Rance (Fredda) Ayers. 21 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren also survive.

Wilson, a prominent physician of this place, was buried here today with Masonic honors. He was found dead in bed. The cause of death is unknown. He lived here all his life and was prominent in public affairs of this town and section.

TOCCOA, GA. -- Alma Lois Tabor Wofford, 75, of 349 S. Alexander St. died Thursday, Nov. 24, 2005, at her home.

Born in Banks County, she was the daughter of the late Ralph and Ella Lee Brown Tabor. She was the widow of Bobby Wofford and was preceded in death by one daughter, Barbara Lee Wofford Wilson. She was a member of King Branch Baptist Church.

She is survived by one grandson.

Services are at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at King Branch Baptist Church, Carnesville, by the Rev. James L. Ramey; burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Moss-Stovall-Neal Funeral Home, Toccoa.

WORLSY, Lee Harland Sr.

Lee Harland Worley Sr., 91, of Lula died Friday, Nov. 4, 2005, at his residence.

Mr. Worley was born on March 16, 1914, in Banks County. He was the son of the late Young and Lou Crumbly Worley and also was preceded in death by his wife, Ola Simmons Worley; sons, Morgan Worley, infant son at birth, and Jerry Worley at 18 months; grandson, Russel Eugene Worley; and son-in-law, the Rev. Hudson Thomas. Mr. Worley was a member of the Belton Baptist Church and formerly worked in the construction industry.

Survivors include two daughters, Louise Thomas, Lula, and Betty Nix, Charleston, S.C.; four sons, Lee Worley, Jr., Gordon Worley, Gene Worley, and Jackie Worley, all of Lula; 14 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and six great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 7, 2005, at Belton Baptist Church, with the Rev. Wayne Hicks, the Rev. Cecil Thomas and the Rev. James Duncan officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery, with the Rev. Wayne Strickland officiating at the graveside.

WRIGHT, Doris S.

Mrs. Doris Scales Wright, of 74 Washington Street, Commerce, died Tuesday, June 22, 2004, at her residence of an extended illness.

Mrs. Wright was a daughter of the late Paul W. and Calla L. Scales.

She was a member of the Commerce First United Methodist Church, where she was a sponsor of the MYF. Mrs. Wright graduated from Young Harris College and taught school at Hickory Flat School and Davis Academy. She later was proprietor of Wrights Ace Hardware and Gift Shop.

Mrs. Wright was preceded in death by three brothers, David F. Scales, Paul W. Scales Jr. and Peyton S. Scales, and one sister, Bess Scales Crawford.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Thursday, June 24, at the Commerce First United Methodist Church with Dr. David Bowen and the Rev. Jim McLendon officiating. Burial was in Jackson Memorial Gardens, Commerce. Mrs. Wright is survived by her husband, William C. (Bill) Wright, of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Frankie and Jay Cook, Athens; a daughter, Paulette Wright Arnold, Birmingham, Ala.; a sister, Eleanor Scales Whitfield, Commerce; four grandchildren, Lea Anne Wallace, Robert E. Arnold Jr., Aimee Forbus and Jay Wright Cook; and eight great-grandchildren.

The Atlanta Constitution, 20 October 1910. MORTUARY. Prior H. Wright. Commmerce, Ga., October 19- Prior H. WRIGHT died at his home in Banksville in Banks county, this morning, being 88 years of age. He was reared in Gum Log, Franklin county, and moved to his present home thirty years ago. He was a prosperous farmer, and was widely known. The internment will take place at Hebron church tomorrow, with religious services conducted by Rev. Marvin Swilling.

Commerce, Ga., June 29- James O. WOOD, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. John W. Dowdy, in this city at the age of 79 years. He was a wealthy and widely-known farmer and the father of the Hon. A. W. Wood, of Banks county, and Dr. Early Wood, of Dalton. The interment will be made at New Salem, in Banks county, tomorrow.

The Atlanta Constitution, 8 February, 1927. Dr. W. E. WOOD DIES AT DALTON. Dalton, Ga., February 7- Dr. William Earl WOOD, 64, one of the leading physicians of northeast Georgia and prominent in local and state politics, died at his residence here this morning after a long illness. He was born in Banks county, July 8, 1864, attended the College of Physicians and Surgeons, New York, and the medical department of the University of Georgia. He settled in Dalton in 1893 to practice medicine and ranked high in the profession. At one time he studied medicine with Governor-elect Hardman. As a doctor, he answered many charity calls. He served three terms as mayor of Dalton and also served a number of years as a member of council and on the board of education and the county board of health. He was a prominent figure in state politics and often attended the state conventions as a delegate from Whitfield county. He was a delegate from the state at large to three national conventions, those held at St. Louis, San Francisco and New York. Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at the Presbyterian church, of which he was a member. Rev. Frank K. Sims, pastor, will officiate. The internment will be in Westview cemetery. Dr. Wood is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Frank F. Baker,Jr., of Atlanta; two sons, Earl Wood, of Atlanta, and Harry Wood, of Dalton.

WORLEY, Robbie Lenora

Robbie Lenora Worley, 83, of Lula died Wednesday at Banks-Jackson-Commerce Medical Center.

Born in Banks County to the late Maybelle Nunley and Dayton Nunley, she was a homemaker and a member of Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church and the Banks County Senior Citizens. She was preceded in death by her husband, Boyd Worley.

Survivors include her daughters, Margaret Purdue, Lula, and Frances Sears, Homer; brothers, Howard Nunley, Toccoa; sisters, Ruth Webb, Gainesville; 19 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

The family received friends Thursday at the funeral home.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 18, 2006, at Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church. The Rev. Phil Ferguson, the Rev. Tim Beasley and the Rev. Bob Reynolds will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church Cemetery.
