The Nahunta United Methodist Church was established in 1916. It was then known as Nahunta Methodist Episcopal Church. Services were held in a tent, and in the home of W. M. and Sally Roberson. The Robersons were Methodists who moved to Nahunta from Jesup.

In 1919, L. S. Robb gave the present church site to Trustees J. B. Lewis, B. G. Middleton, and W. M. Roberson for the sum of one dollar. Elliot Knox and Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Brooker provided materials for the first building. Mr. Knox gave lumber from unused turpentine workers’ houses. W. M. Roberson, father of Mrs. Brooker, had provided the Brookers with lumber for a house; they were not ready to build, and they gave their lumber to the church. Members and friends of the church provided labor needed for construction. The first sanctuary was completed in 1922.

Mr. W. M. "Uncle Bill" Roberson played a big part in establishing the church; he helped in many ways. He furnished room and board for many of the earlier pastors. He also ran an electric line from his Delco Plant to the church to provide lights for the night services.

Some of the first members who worked diligently for the church were: Ira F. Brown, Sr., Mr. and Mrs. W.H.O. Smith, Mr. and Mrs. A. S. Mizell, Mrs. J. B. Lewis, Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Driver, Mrs. Georgia Belle Rogers Dowling, Mrs. Mary S. Shue, Glenn Condit, Joseph R. Roberson, Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Roberson, and Mrs. Emmie Newton. Some of the earliest christenings were those of Mary Virginia Rogers in 1921 and Carolyn Smith Lewis, and Effie Smith Middleton in 1926.

In 1940, A. S. Mizell gave land for the first parsonage. J. B. Lewis was in charge of volunteer labor. The church was remodeled in 1953. Butler Graham was chairman of the Trustees and supervised this project. The initial part of the fellowship hall was built in 1975-1976 under the leadership of Neil Hendrix.

Through the years, pastors and members have come and gone, but there continues to be a great love for God and fellow man emanating from this church.
