The letter was written to my great great grandfather, William R. Bankston, who was Clerk Superior Court in Butts County. The John D. Beauchamp mentioned in the letter was a brother to his daughter in law, Nancy Jane Beauchamp Bankston (wife of Leonidas Augustus Bankston).

WILLIAM R. BANKSTON

AN OLD TIME FACE

Sitting on the mantel in the clerk´s office, in the courthouse, is a photograph of Mr. Wm. R. Bankston, who for many years filled the office clerk of this county.  The face is familiar to all the older citizens of the county, as from the early days of the county´s organization this gentleman was almost invariable called upon to draw up all the deeds, bonds and other legal papers for a great many of our citizens.  He was noted as being one of the best penmen in Georgia, which the records of the office will show.  Mr. Bankston is yet living with his son James, three miles from town and being old and unable to do manual labor, spends his time in fishing, hunting, etc.  Many are the interesting incidents that he can tell of antebellum days and the trying times of the war.  Long may he yet live in the land of his birth and among his friends.

J. E. Bankston - Worker

We are willing to wager all the money that is due us, that we do not expect to collect, that Mr. J. E. Bankston, of this place, is the most energetic man in this county.  Often before sunrise he can be seen wending his way to the farm and as soon as a half dozen plows can be put under headway, he leaves them, and is next seen on a dray with his pants hidden about twenty inches in cow leather cracking his whip behind a dashing team, hauling freight for the other merchants.  In fact he sells dry goods and groceries, hauls fertilizers, lumber, clears land, plows, plants, builds houses, makes sidewalks, keeps books for large firm etc., all at the same time.  If Butts County was crowded with just such boys as Jim Bankston, she would soon bloom like the rose and flourish like a green bay tree.  He certainly deserved success.
