Is Advanced to a Third Class Office

Another indication of Jackson's substantial progress is found in the fact that the postoffice here has been advanced to third class, making a presidential office of it.

The postmaster here was notified last week that this change in the office here had been made, and that his salary had been fixed at $1,100 per annum.

Following is the copy of the order from the postoffice department at Washington:

Washington, D.C., Sept.20, 1897
Postmaster, Jackson, Ga. Sir:
Your office having met the requirements of the act approved mrch 3, 1885, the same is hereby advanced to third class, effective October 1, 1897, and your salary is fixed at $1,100 from the same date.

Jackson postoffice now ranks along with other city postoffices, and the postmaster will not be affected by a boycott of his office, should one occur. It is interesting as showing the advance in business at Jackson.
