Aiken Rites Were Held On Monday
Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Alice Smith Aiken, 85, were conducted Monday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the Red Oak United Methodist Church in Newton County. The Rev. Worley Lunceford and Rev. J. C. Parham officiated and interment was in the Church cemetery under the direction of Haisten Funeral Home.
Mrs. Aiken, a former resident of the Stewart Community in Newton County, died Saturday evening at the Northside Convalescent Center in Atlanta following an illness of several months.
Mrs. Aiken was a member of a pioneer Butts County family, the Smiths settling here in the early 1800's. Her father was the late Stephen Jackson (Jack) Smith who often wrote articles for the local papers under the heading "Plow Handles." Her mother was the late Mary Jane Hale Smith. She was the widow of the late George Edwin Aiken.
She was a member of the Red Oak United Methodist Church in Newton County. Survivors include a brother, Robert L. Smith of Wyoming, Delaware; four sisters, Mrs. Ophelia Andrews, Mrs. Floride Watkins and Miss Ethel Smith all of Jackson, and Mrs. Annie Mae Lane of Dunwoody; several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were: T. J. Smith, Sam Smith, Jr., Vince Johnson, Roy Crittenden, Jim Traylor and William Mitchell.
