Mr. Wiley Mick Aiken
Mr. W. Mick Aiken Accident Victim
While Riding on Wagon Young Man Was Struck by Automobile and Fatally Injured. Funeral Sunday.
Mr. Wiley Mick Aiken, 35 years of age, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Aiken, of Jackson, met death Saturday afternoon about 2 o'clock when struck by an automobile driven by Mr. E. I. Rooks, of Jackson.
The accident occurred on the Jackson-Barnesville highway near, the A. A. Fuqua home.
The exact details are not clear and the accident appears to have been unavoidable.
Mr. Aiken with his brother, H. R. Aiken, was riding a wagon proceeding in the direction of Jackson, while Mr. Rooks was driving in the direction of Barnesville.
According to a statement made by the brother of the unfortunate young man, Mick Aiken, who was driving, handed the lines to his brother and asked him to drive while he rolled a cigarette. In swinging his feet over the wheels, he was caught by the handle of the car just as it passed.
Another theory is that Mr. Aiken, after deciding to roll a cigarette, jumped off the wagon and intended to walk up the hill. Just as he swung clear of the wagon he was hit by the car.
The accident happened so suddenly that the exact nature will probably never be known.
The post of the automobile struck the young man's head, inflicting a fatal injury. He succumbed almost immediately after being struck and before medical assistance could be summoned.
The tragedy came as a shock to the family and friends of Mr. Aiken. Mr. Rooks, who is regarded as a safe driver is upset over the unfortunate affair.
Mr. Aiken was a native of Butts county and resided a few miles from Jackson. He was an industrious and hard working young man and was held in general high esteem by all who knew him.
He is survived by his parents and three sisters, Misses Martha and Ruth Aiken, and Mrs. H. G. Lowery, of Jackson; a brother, H. R. Aiken, of Jackson, and nephew, Ray Lowery, all of whom have the sympathy of many friends in their bereavement.
Funeral services, which were largely attended, were held at Liberty church Sunday afternoon at 3:30. Rev. P. P. Mosely, of Forsyth, was the officiating minister. The lovely floral tributes attested the esteem in which he was held. Interment was in the churchyard.
