Mrs. Martha Rebecca Akerman died suddenly at her home in Athens last Friday night at 7 o'clock. Mrs. Akerman, who was in her seventy-second year, had been in feeble health for some time though her death came as a surprise and shock to the family and friends.
Mrs. Akerman formerly lived in Cartersville, and was the widow of Col. Amos Tappan Akerman, Attorney General in Grant's Cabinet, and one of the most prominent men in the state. She is survived by seven sons, Prof. Alfred Akerman, who holds the chair of Forestry in the University of Georgia at Athens and is proprietor of the Progress; Charles and Alexander Akerman, prominent attorneys of Macon; Walter Akerman, postmaster at Cartersville; Dr. Joseph Akerman, of Wilmington, N. C.; Benjamin Akerman, of Mexico, Clement Akerman, of Washington state.
The funeral and interment was at Cartersville Sunday afternoon. Mrs. Akerman was a most excellent Christian lady and friends of the family will learn with regret of her death.
