Mrs. Allen Dies of Injury in Day Crash
Mrs. Carol F. Allen of Route Covington, critically injured about 9:50 Friday night in the collision of two cars on Halls Bridge Road, succumbed to her injuries about 11:30 o'clock Tuesday morning at Emory University Hospital, Atlanta. Four other persons were injured in the crash which occurred only a few yards from the scene of the head on collision in July 1962 that killed five Butts County Negroes.
Four members of a Covington family were occupants of the compact car that was in collision with a car being driven in the direction of Jackson by Luther Byars of Route 2, Jackson. Occupants of the Newton County car were listed, in addition to the above mentioned deceased victim as Samuel Anthony Allen and his son, Butch, about two, listed in "satisfactory" condition at Newton County Hospital; and Melanie Frix, 9-year-old sister of Mrs. Allen, who Wednesday was listed in "poor" condition at Eggleston Hospital in Atlanta.
The injured were rushed by ambulance to Sylvan Grove Hospital where all four passengers of the Allen automobile were transferred to the Newton County Hospital in Covington. In a short time, Mrs. Allen was moved to Emory University Hospital and Melanie to Eggleston.
Members of the Butts County Sheriff's Department and of the State Patrol, who investigated the crash, said that it occurred during a moderate shower with visibility poor and the pavement wet.
Both Mrs. Allen and Melanie suffered critical head injuries and lacerations to their face and head. Mrs. Allen suffered a deep and jagged cut on her throat.
Mr. Byars was cut about the head and face and complained of back pains. He was admitted to Sylvan Grove Hospital but was discharged Saturday.
