Mr. Allen Victim of Falling Tree
Caretaker of the Indian Springs Camp Ground Dies as Result of Injuries Sustained Saturday Morning
Mr. Frank Putnam Allen, aged 60, caretaker of the Indian Springs Holiness Camp Ground, died Saturday night at 12 o'clock at a Griffin hospital as the result of injuries received Saturday morning while he was assisting in cutting a tree at the campground. News of his death brought deep sorrow to friends here and elsewhere over the state.
Mr. Allen, who had been caretaker at the campground for the past four years, was caught by a falling tree and his right leg was broken above the knee and the flesh split open below the knee. After the timber was removed and he was given medical assistance, he was carried to the Griffin hospital for treatment. Loss of blood and shock produced death several hours after the accident.
It was said that Mr. Allen was assisting in cutting a tree and efforts were made to prevent it from falling on a building. The tree, which had a rotten core, fell prematurely and kicking back pinned Mr. Allen to the ground.
Mr. Allen was one of the best known and most highly esteemed citizens in the county. During his residence at the camp ground he had made scores of friends among all classes of citizens. He was intensely interested in religious affairs and was a singer of note. He was born in Iowa and previous to his connection at the Indian Springs camp ground had been an evangelistic singer. His work at the large camp ground was tireless and painstaking and won the commendation of the trustees. He had done much to improve and beautify the grounds, and in this work had the active assistance and companionship of Mrs. Allen.
Mr. Allen was a member of the Jackson Methodist church and was a regular attendant at church services, rendering valuable assistance in the music. He was a man of splendid character and numbered his friends by his acquaintances. The trustees of the camp ground feel his loss keenly.
Surviving Mr. Allen are his wife, formerly Miss Ellen Barrett, of Barwick, Ga.; four sisters, Mrs. B. A. Taylor, of St. Paris, Ohio; Mrs. A. Taylor, of St. Paris, Ohio; Mrs. L. B. Robinson and Miss Carrie Allen, of Plains City, Ohio, and Mrs. R. W. Eddy, of Chesterland, Ohio. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Allen, of Iowa.
Funeral services, which were attended by a throng of friends, were held at the Flovilla Methodist church Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, with Dr. J. M. Glenn, of Columbus, Rev. M. R. Heflin, of Jackson, and Rev. Harvey A. King, of Flovilla, officiating. The pallbearers were Messrs. H. S. Downs, A. V. Whitney, F. C. Maddux, Dr. R. B. Thompson, R. W. Watkins and George Baker. Interment was in the Flovilla cemetery.
