Mr. George William Allen, 79 years of age, one of the county's best known citizens, died in an Atlanta hospital Monday morning following an operation. He was admitted to the hospital Sunday night for emergency treatment.
Born in Newton county, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Allen, large plantation owners, Mr. Allen moved to Jackson more than 50 years ago. In the intervening period he had been a successful farmer and showed interest in all progressive movements. He was a member of the Jackson Methodist church.
Surviving relatives include his wife, the former Miss Corel Watkins, eldest child and only daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. B. F. Watkins; twin daughters, Mrs. Clyde Wright, of Atlanta, and Mrs. E. D. Allen, of Jackson; two grandsons, Billy and Benjamin Wright; five granddaughters, Mrs. Van Hay, Mrs. A. M. Davis, Misses Laura, Frances and Margaret Allen, all of Jackson; one great granddaughter. Miriam Davis; four sisters, Mrs. Minnie Robinson, of Augusta; Mrs. Jempsey Farmer, of Atlanta; Mrs. Robert Bickerstaff, of Athens, and Mrs. Lon Shipley, of Magnolia, Ark.; one brother, Harvey Allen, of Shreveport, La.
Funeral services were held at the Jackson Methodist church Tuesday afternoon at 3 o'clock with the Rev. J. C. Callaway, pastor, officiating. Relatives and friends sent lovely floral offerings as a token of affection. The pallbearers were Obie Watkins, H. L. Allen, C. M. Compton, T. O. McDonald, Guy Bailey, R. W. Lamb.
Interment was in the Jackson cemetery with Thornton Funeral Homes in charge of arrangements.
