W. M. Andrews Taken By Death Saturday Night
Judge William Montezuma Andrews, 78 years of age, died at his home on Indian Springs street Saturday night about 9 o'clock after an illness of several months. His death not unexpected, removed one of the county's best known residents.
Born August 28, 1865, the son of John Andrews and Mrs. Kate Nelson Andrews, prominent residents of the county before and after the Civil War, Mr. Andrews was a life long citizen of the county. His father was a large plantation owner of Iron Springs district, and there Mr. Andrews was engaged in farming until a few years ago when he moved to Jackson. He was successful as a planter and was a man of influence in his district. He served as a member of the Butts County Democratic committee and as a Jury Commissioner and for years was justice of the peace in Iron Springs district. Upon moving to Jackson he was elected justice of the peace and held that office until recently.
Judge Andrews was interested in good government and used his influence to improve conditions. Unusually well informed, he was considered an authority on current facts and dates of history. He was a member of Macedonia church.
Survivors are his wife, the former Miss Nannie Preston of Butts county; four sons, J. Lee Andrews, Springfield, Ohio; Nelson Andrews, Center Hill, Fla.; W. Y. Andrews, project manager of the Lamar County Electric Membership Corporation; James Andrews, US Navy, Williamsburg, Va.; two daughters, Mrs. J. S. Jackson, Macon, and Mrs. A. G. Loyd, Covington. He is also survived by the following grandchildren. Amon B. Lindsey Jr., Detroit, Mich.; Pvt. Crawford A. Lindsey, Salt Lake City, Utah; Sgt. J. S. Jackson, Jr., US Air Corps, Dale Mabry Field, Tallahassee, Fla.; Cpl. William M. Jackson, US Air Corps, Topeka, Kansas; Miss Julia Jackson, Macon; W. Y. Andrews, Jr., Macon; J. Lee Andrews Jr., USNR, Atlanta, and Gibson Loyd, Covington.
Funeral services were held at the First Baptist church Monday afternoon at 4 o'clock with Rev. E. M. Wise of the Methodist church, Rev. Z. M. Leverette of the Baptist church and Rev. W. H. Boswell of the Church of the Nazarene officiating.
Honorary pallbearers were W. M. Redman, C. L. Redman, Dr. R. A. Franklin, Paul Maddox, George Head, William G. Preston, M. L. Powell, Pratt Smith, J. L. Lyons, Avon Gaston, O. E. Smith, Edgar McMichael. Active pallbearers were Herbert Moore, Walstein McMichael, Marlin Spencer, Ben Garland, Morris Moore. Byrd O'Neal.
Burial was in the family lot in Macedonia cemetery and plans were directed by Thornton Funeral Homes.
