Colored Citizen Was Killed by Automobile
Mangled Body of Will Appling Found on Highway near Jackson. Inquest Concluded Tuesday.
The mangled body of Will Appling, negro man between 46 and 50 years of age, was found on Route 42 near First Creek Sunday night, where it had been hurled some distance after being struck by a passing automobile.
Officers investigating said death appeared to have resulted instantly. The left leg was broken and there were bruises about the head and face and probably internal injuries.
Coroner A. A. White assembled a jury Monday and investigated the case. The inquest was concluded Tuesday and the verdict was that Appling came to hjs death by being struck by an automobile driven by a party unknown to the jury.
Composing the Jury were E. C. Moncrief, Ed Leverette, A. S. Mills, Tom Thurston, N. A Leverett and L. L. Colwell.
Appling was said to belong to the better type of his race and was known as a hard working and industrious citizen. He resided on the E. L. Smith farm near Jackson.
