David J. Arnold, Griffin Leader, Buried Friday
Mr. David Jackson Arnold, 64, of Griffin, one of the Fourth District's most prominent and influential citizens, died at 3:55 Thursday morning in the Griffin-Spalding County Hospital from a stroke suffered at his home Wednesday evening.
Funeral services for Mr. Arnold were held Friday afternoon at three o'clock at Pittman-Rawls Chapel in Griffin with the Rev C. Edward Davis officiating. Interment was in Oak Hill Cemetery.
Born in Henry County, Mr. Arnold moved to Griffin from Hampton 27 years ago. He was born in Hampton June 26, 1897, the son of the late Mr. Robert J. Arnold and Mrs. Nell Curry Arnold. He was educated in the public schools of Henry county and graduated from Georgia Tech.
He was president of the Commercial Bank and Trust Company and president of the Middle Georgia Mutual Insurance Company. Mr. Arnold was a former president of the Georgia Bankers Association and former president of the Georgia Tech National Alumni Association. He was also a member of the Geogia Tech Foundation. A devoted supporter of Georgia Tech, Mr. Arnold missed only three home games of the Yellow Jackets in more than 40 years, these occasioned by personal illness or by a member of his family.
Mr. Arnold served several terms in both the House of Representatives and in the State Senate. He was a former president of the Griffin-Spalding County Chamber of Commerce and was a long time member of the Griffin Rotary Club. For many years Mr. Arnold was a member of the State Democratic Executive Committee, the Fourth District Democratic Executive Committee, and the Spalding Count Democratic Executive Committee. He was a member of the First Baptist Church and of the Griffin Elks Lodge.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Ethel Sloan Arnold; a daughter, Mrs. William T. Newman, Atlanta; two sisters, Mrs. Paul Brown, Elberton and Mrs. Arnold Bowden, Milledgeville; a brother, Robert O. Arnold, Covington, chairman of the State Board of Regents; and two grandchildren.
Pallbearers were John Mills, Howard Collier, C. T. Parker, John Morrow, Tillman Blakely, Jim Budd, Joe Warren and Ennis Parker.
