Mr. W. L. Averett of Route 2, Jackson, died late Wednesday afternoon at the Jasper Memorial Hospital in Monticello following a critical illness. Mr. Averett, 43, was a machinist and was making his home near the Newton County line. He had lived out of the state for several years before moving back to Butts County recently.
Mr. Averett was a native of Crawford County, the son of the late Mr. William Averett and Mrs. Mary Lou Bartlett Averett of Macon, who survives. A veteran of World War Two, he served in the European Theatre with the infantry. He was a member of the Dixon Methodist Church in Crawford County.
Funeral services were conducted at 11 o'clock Saturday morning from the Dixon Methodist Church with the Rev. Frank Chapman and Rev. Tom Schlinker officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery. Prior to the Saturday service; the body was carried Friday at noon to Horton Ivey Funeral Home in Macon where it lay in state until time for services. Haisten Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Natoma Lummus Averett of Jackson ; mother, Mrs. Mary B. Averett of Macon; six sisters, Mrs. Pauline Gordon of Roberta, Mrs. Ruby Chapman of Fort Valley, Mrs. Susie Mae Schoonover of Augusta, Mrs. Erma Grimsley of Danville and Mrs. Thomas Williams of Macon.
