Queen Victoria
The Good Queen Dead
The death of Queen Victoria of Great Brittain [sic] on the 22nd inst. was an event of world-wide importance. No sovereign ever occupied the throne for a longer period than Victoria, nor were any of her predecessors more popular with all classes of people. By her death the Prince of Wales becomes ruler under the title of Edward VII, King of Great Britain and Emperor of India. There is general sorrow over the death of the queen and thousands of beautiful tributes are being paid to her memory. In speaking of her Bishop Candler very truthfully says:
Queen Victoria, the greatest of English sovereigns since the reign of William and Mary, if not since the days of William the Conqueror. It is sometimes said that she enjoyed only the shadow of royalty, that she "reigned but did not rule." True enough from one standpoint, but from another point of view it may be truly said that she ruled more really than did any of her predecessors. She ruled by the majesty of lofty personal character and by the despotism of royal love. King Edward VII, will do well to realize that he also must rule that way, or rule for less than did his mother, or not rule at all. Any other sort of ruling is out of date in England.
