timber. BOWMAN is willing for those who live on Cumberland to live there for the time being,
that is, those who have fled from the mainland on account of the Indians but they are not to hurt

Agreement between the said parties to purchase a ract of land, 1620 acres, on the north side of
St. Marys River, Camden County, same to be laid out into a town-site in squares each; with a
proviso that all lands over after the squares (or lots) have been surveyed out, to be owned
jointly by the parties. Two of the squares to be run into lots of one acre each and when sold
to other parties the purchaser must agree to build within six months from date of purchase a
house of not less than 16X24 feet in size of logs or brick and that to be done before he shall
receive title.
NOTE: This was the beginning of the present city of St. Marys. The town-site was at first
named St. Patrick but within two or three years the name was changed to St. Marys. On the basis
of the above agreement the land was duly bought as shown by next item below, and run into
"squares". Th Editor failed to find any deed to each of the parties for their respective
squares; it was probably determined by some sort of drawing.

Affidavit is attached to deed and recorded with it, by Wilson WILLIAMS who says that in 1788
he and his brother, Abner WILLIAMS were security for William ASHLEY concerning a law-suit and
that by reason of same said William ASHLEY and one in name of said William ASHLEY; that the suit
was later settled and that he and his brother ABNER were then to convey said property back to
ASHLEY but Abner's death occurred before the deed could be made.

a memorandum to Jacob WEED stating that he knows he is indebted to him (WEED) for lots in St.
Marys some of which he has sold, and that in event he fails to return home he (FLEMING)
relinquishes all his claim in the property back to WEED. (Note: It is not shown whether
FLEMING returned from his trip or not.)

conveying two tracts of land on Todd's Creek.
(B/233) William DAWSON of Edgefield, S.C., to William DALLAS of St. Marys, deed dated Oct.
20, 1795, for lot #13 in St. Marys.
(B/235) Claud BOREL late of St. Domingo, but now of Camden County made his bond at Kingston,
Jamaica, on May 27, 1795, to Alexander DONALDSON, Alexander FORBES and Patrick THOMPSON for
3922L and still owes same since moving to Camden Co. He now within three months after arriving
here (he arriced here June 15, 1795) makes mortgage to said parties to secure said bond,
covering his slaves listed in the mortgage. NOTE: The term "bond" as used in those days is
what we would now call a promissory note, except that it was made in double the amount due if
the promissor failed to pay the principal amount at maturity, therefore should not be confused
with "bond" as the term is understood today.
(B/241) Affidavit of Bernard O'CALLAHAN made in St. Marys, July 29, 1796, in which he says he
was present in St. Augustine six or seven years previously when a certain slave was sold at
public sale and was bought in by William MILLS, a subject to His Catholic Majesty, and said
MILLS has ever since owned the slave who ran away from MILLS and disappeared about two weeks
ago. MILLS affidavit on p. 242, says the negro has come to Camden Co., and is now a Richard
LANG'S place on the St. Marys' River in said county.

(her dec'd. husband) before the latter went to Savannah, $112.00 for the house in St. Marys and
had his note for $120.00 which when paid shse suld gvie affiant a horse and a cow.

(B/332) Antoine SUARES of St. Marys to Sgt. Thaddeus PARHURST, bill of sale dated Jan. 4,
1797, to a certain dwelling-house which the grantee is to move off the land it is on, within
18 months.
(B/335) John KING, John BURROWS, Richard CARNES, James SEAGROVE, all Justices of the Peace,
presided in the trial of two slaves Jan. 7, 1797, charged with burglary. The slaves were found
quilty and sentenced to be hung. A transcript of the testimony on the trial and the judgement
of the court is recorded.
(B/344) James ATKINSON of Glynn Co., now a soldier in Capt. RANDOLPH'S calvary company, to
:angley BRYANT of Camden Co. Deed dated July 1, 1795, conveying 200 acres granted the grantor
by the State Dec. 6, 1792.
(B/350) A letter is recorded dated St. Marys, Oct. 28, 1793, from Alexander YOUNG to Richard
CARNES asking him to apply to the House (the legislature) to make him a citizen, and detailing
why he was behind in making settlement with the State Treasure GIBBONS for taxes, YOUNG being
the Tax-collector at he time. On p. 352 an affidavit is recorded made by James FINLEY in
Richmond Co., Nov. 19, 1794, saying that said YOUNG had told him (affiant) that he was one of
FERGUSON"S company in the battle at King's Mountain and was captured by the Americans but
escaped from his captors. (Note: As is generally known by our readers, FERGUSON was the
notorious Tory leader in the Revolutionary War.)

by Alden Sponner, J.P., in New Bedford, Mass., certifying that said Mrs. WILCOX is the MOTHER
and sole heir of William BABCOCK, bricklayer who (it stated) died in St. Marys, Ga.

Receipt dated at St. Marys, Oct. 17, 1795, for overplus of sale of lot 23 in St. Marys sold for
taxes Sept. 20, 1793 to Thomas NORRIS & Son as property of Lemuel Gulliver DAWSON, son of
William DAWSON.
(B/435) Administrator's Bond of Robert STAFFORD, Admr. of William REDDY, deceased, dated Nov.
18, 1797, from James SEAGROVE to the Registrar of Probate urging the appointment of STAFFORD as
Admr., and stating: "The habit of friendship that long subsisted between the deceased and the
applicant as well as Mr. STAFFORD'S well-established, upright character, ought to give him a
preference in the quardenship of the property for the heirs if any." He offers to become
bondsman and says the Registrar may consider the letter as his endorsement of the STAFFORD
bond. NOTE: It is apparent that STAFFORD was unrelated to the deceased and that the latter's
heirs were unknown to the writer (SEAGROVE).

NOTE: An extensive search was made in Camden County records in 1949 and no Deed Book "C" was
found. The State Dept. of Archives & History has divided the large book "B" into two books ----
"Book B-C/1" and "Book B-C/2".
