“TRION FACTS” NEWSPAPER
January 23, 1930
Mr. O.M.
Westbrook was born in Chattooga county, Georgia, in West Armuchee, December 30,
1872. He grew to manhood in his home community, being known far and near as a model
boy.
At the age of 21 he was married to Miss Artmisa Moore to which union there
was born seven children, four of whom are still living.
Twenty-two years ago
Mr. Westbrook and his family moved to Trion, where they have lived constantly ever
since.
Over forty years ago he became a Christian being only a small boy at the
time. He united with the Methodist Episcopal church, South, immediately, and until
his health failed him so completely some three years ago he was one of the most
faithful members that Trion Methodist church has ever had.
Mr. Westbrook believed
that religion was intended to be a life to life, and not merely to profess, and
he accordingly made it his aim in life to strive for the cleanest, best walk before
his fellow-men possible. And to listen to any group of acquaintances discuss his
life is to learn that his success is believed in by the multitudes.
Unassuming,
gentle, kind and ever smiling, Mr. Westbrook mixed and mingled with his fellow-citizens
a force of righteousness without leaving the impression that he was parading “his
righteousness,” and his influence for good will be felt in Trion long after his
memory has become forgotten by future generations.
He was a member of the Independent
Order of Odd Fellows, and his reputation for faithfulness to his obligation in this
order is proverbial. He filled every office in the local lodge, was ever present
at its meetings unless providentially prevented and was credited with being one
of the best of the membership in the work of the local order.
Although his final
illness had been of years duration, and although his friends had felt for some time
that he would probably never be a well man again, his condition had become much
improved of late, and it was quite a shock to learn that he had suddenly passed
to his reward Sunday, January 12. He was buried in the Trion cemetery and following
Tuesday, his funeral having been conducted at the Trion Methodist church prior to
that, the pastor, Rev. Fred H. Ray, and a former pastor, Rev. Tom Williams, of Lafayette,
conducting the services.
He is survived by his wife and the following children:
Mr. Hamp Westbrook, Mr. Leonard Westbrook, Mrs. Ethel Bryant and Mrs. Margaret Hill,
all of Trion; all of whom look to a brighter day when they hope to be reunited with
one who was a devoted husband and affectionate father.
Fred H. Ray, Pastor
M.E. Church, South
