ELIJAH TANNER DEATH NOTICE

Transcribed from “The Douglas Enterprise”
Issue: Saturday, May 2nd, 1908

Death of Mr. Elijah Tanner, Sr.

Mr. Elijah Tanner, whose death occured at Fales, Ga., in this county, last Tuesday, of heart troubles, was one of the pioneers of the county, in fact, our informant does not know if he was not born here. He was seventy-three years of age, and was the father of B.H. Tanner, Warren Tanner, T.J. Tanner, Mrs. S. Fales, Mrs. M. Meeks, and Mrs. T. Davis, all of whom are living.

Mr. Tanner represented Coffee county two terms in the legislature, and may have held other offices of which we are not informed. While he did not profess to be a christian he was a generous hearted, hospitable man, not afraid of anything or anybody, but if he was your friend there was no deceit in that pretension.

He loved a good joke, and eight or nine years ago he was of sunny, genial dispostion, but as extreme age came on with consequent affliction, he had but little to say.

His remains were interred at the Tanner Church, near Fales, last Wednesday, and his funeral was preached by Rev. Jno. E. Smith and T.P. O'Neal, a large concourse of people being present.

Well, our old friend is gone. He will never guy us about having been beaten in the populist election eight years ago, as he has done so often, good humoradly, as he sat by our stove in the office. He was on the road longer than the writer and has found rest sooner, but the night is far spent, and it is not known but that we shall follow ere long.
