Courthouse Fires
The first known fire which destroyed the courthouse and all records was in April 1853. This is documented in a GA law regarding distribution of mony.
The second fire was sometime during the Civil War. I'm not sure of the exact year, but probably ca 1863/64. The replacement courthouse was not built until 1869. In some of the old Superior Court minutes I have found where the county officials were "slapped on the hand" by the Grand Jury for not replacing it. It seems they did acknowledge the lack of money being so soon after the War, however.
I can find no record of the fire of 1895. It must have been confined to one area or room of the courthouse and not much damage done. This building was torn down in 1926 when the present building was constructed; this information per newspaper files.
Only two old probate books survive before 1900 and a few loose papers which date mostly in the 1890s. If there was a fire in 1895 it was mostly likely in the Probate (formerally Ordinary) Office as this is the one area records did not survive.
