July 8, 1861. He was killed in
action during skirmishes at Sewell Mountain and Cotton Hill, Virginia on Dec.
17, 1861.
Company F, 13th
Regiment Georgia Infantry was organized in Fayette County in June 1861 with 86
men enrolled. On July 1st it was
sent to Griffin, Ga. The regiment
was mustered into service the 8th of July 1861; was provided with tents, etc.
Shortly after it was ordered to Decatur, Ga., then to Richmond, Va. where it
went into camp. About the 1st of September it was armed with flint and steel
muskets, was ordered to West Virginia, and was attached to Floyd's Brigade.
We were engaged
in only two little skirmishes, at Sewell Mountain and Cotton Hill, Va.
We suffered much for want of supplies and cold weather.
We had to destroy all camp equipment in compliance with orders from the
General commanding. At the close of
the campaign in December the regiment was detached from Floyd's Brigade and
ordered to Savannah, Ga. The
regiment reached Savannah, Ga. the last of December 1861.
It was engaged most of the time in fortifying the city.
No engagement, except one little skirmish on White Marsh Island, and the
casualties were light.
The regiment was
now supplied with Enfield Rifles and the necessary camp equipage.
On the 7th of June the Brigade was ordered to Virginia.
On reaching Staunton the Brigade was attached to Stonewall Jackson's
Corps. Then commenced the celebrated
march to McLellan's Run, (?) near Richmond.
The company's first general engagement was at Cold Harbor June 27, 1862.
We suffered severely in killed and wounded.
At Malvern Hill on July 2, 1862, the loss was considerable.
