Miss Pearlie Griggs, My dear Neice and Granddaughter,
We received your highly appreciated letter a few days ago; was so glad
to hear from you and to hear you was well. This leaves us up but ma has
been real sick or I would have wrote you sooner. Please don't think hard
of us, pearlie. You can't imagine how much I enjoy reading your letters.
They are so noble and inspiring. I know you are a noble girl and one
that any father and mother would be proud of.
Pearlie, I hope Mr. Barr is as noble and good as I think you are.
If he is worthy of you, your heart will tell you if he is the one for
you but you know there is none perfect in every respect on earth so we
need not look for perfection.
Pearlie, you don't know how proud we was when we got your letter
that you and Rhodum was coming this summer. Be sure and come. I know we
will have a nice time. James Carson said he was anxious to meet you. He
is real nice and Sallie Mae Norton said she was going to claim Rhodum.
She thinks his photo is real handsome. Pearlie, I wish you was here
today. It is such a beautiful sunshiny day and warm after such bad sluty
weather. You know I enjoy being out doors. I can't wash yet but I swept
the yards and wished I could wash but I have rheumatism in my arms and
have had to get a negro to wash nearly 2 years. Health is one of the
greatest blessings on earth. I nor ma either one don't have good health
but thank God we are up.
Pearlie, a girl sent Sammie her picture yesterday. Her name is
Lessie Hobbs. He has never seen her but sister thinks alot of her.
Sister was well but wrote Luke was sick. Sister wants to see you all so
bad. Be sure to come this summer.
Sister and Lessie are coming. Don't you know we will have a
delightful time. And I know Rhodum and Sammie can have a good time. If I
could see you, I could talk you off to sleep like I did Sarah when she
was here. Kiss Dovie and sweet little Willie for me. Write soon.
Your Aunt and Grandma,
D.J. owen & Nannie Cobb
P. S. Pearlie, there is some fine seed ma sent you. They are pretty.
Note: Dovie & Willie mentioned in above letter were Dovie & William
Thomas Griggs, children of James Neil/Neal & Sarah Elizabeth (Bowers)
Griggs.
