Shadnor Baptist Church CemeteryUnion City, Fulton County, Georgia |
Many thanks go to Cathy Klingensmith
for this transcription and all other information pertaining to Shadnor Baptist
Chruch Cemetery. Her hard work and willingness to share with her fellow
researchers is great appreciated.
Shadnor Baptist Church Cemetary is located at 6320 Westbrook Avenue, Union City,
Ga. Traveling I-85S take the Flat Shoals Road Exit, turn right. Follow Flat
Shoals Road until it deadends into Westbrook Avenue. The church and cemetery
are on the right. The older part of the cemetery is located to the left of the
church. The newer part of the cemetery is located behind the church off of Flat
Shoals Road just before the railroad tracks. The older cemetery is divided more
into plots rather than rows, with different families sharing those plots in
many cases. There are some 800 headstones that were surveyed between the two
cemeteries. This cemetery has more than 100 unmarked graves, some of which are
designated by rocks and others which are simply depressions in the earth. The
church kept no records on the burials. The newer cemetery is divided into distinct
rows with family plots. Founded originally in 1840 as New Hope Baptist Church,
the name was changed to Shadnor Baptist Church in 1853 in honor of a Mr. Shadnor
who contributed time and energy in helping the church. The church’s location
has changed three times since its establishment. The historical recordings of
the church during the Civil War refer to it as New Hope, Shadna, and Sideling.
I have available a history of the church including 16 references from the Civil War, along with lists of the Sunday School Superintendents, Ministers, Deacons, Treasurers, & Church Clerks. The following surnames are in my genealogy: VICKERY, HUDGENS, GRIZZARD, HOLSOMBACK, SCARBROUGH, TURNER, GODWIN, LUCK, DUNN, BUFFINGTON, PRICE and extended families. Anyone related to these families may contact me for further information and sharing.
Under the marker column, MM = Military marker, ME = Masonic emblem, EA = Eastern
Star, and three initials indicate a footmarker. Items in parenthesis ( ) are
personal notations based on my genealogy. All spellings have been copied identical
from the headstone as well as dates.
