1. WILLIAM SILAS4 BROWN (SAMUEL3, LEWIS2, UNK1) was born May 30, 1842, and died March 01, 1925 in Fain Cemetary, Calhoun, Gordon Co, Ga. He married MARY ELIZA PACE January 07, 1866, daughter of RICHARD PACE and NANCY UNK. She was born November 16, 1849, and died April 02, 1927 in Gordon Co, Ga.

Last Will and Testament of William S B n.

In the name of God, I William S BROWN of the County of Gordon, in the state of Georgia, being of sound mind do make this my last will and testament in the following manner: I give to my dear wife, Mary E BROWN all my real estate and personal property that I am in possession of at time of death. Should this or the proceeds of the farm fail to support her, she has the right to bor any amount necessary to sustain her on this property. At her death our daughters are to have our household goods. After marking our graves, whatever remains is to be divided between our heirs. I appoint my son Benjamin F B n to execute this will and L E BROWN I hereunto set my hand and seal the ninth day of June in the year of our Lord nineteen hundred and sixteen.

William Silas had a muzzle loader rifle that he had brought home from the war. I was passed along to Lewis Elbert BROWN who kept it hanging in his bedroom. The gun is now in a state of major disrepair, with the trigger and flint hammers missing. It is in the possession of Scottie BROWN of Calhoun, Ga.

Mary and Lee had no children. They would visit all the family at least once a year. It is my belief that Mary died in a nursing home in Carrolton, Ga.

Jewell B Reeves, Calhoun Ga, 1962 publihed a book "Climb unto these Hills of Gordon". Copy is in the Calhoun public library. Pages 279 and 280.

It was moving day on Wall Street one August day in 1898. Mr and Mrs Tom B n were taking possesion of their elegant new residence, just completed. Tom had bought a lot from Dink Offut in 1897.
For about five years there had been only three houses north of the Baptist Church, the old Gabe Hunt house, the Logan Pitts, built in 1893 and W F King house built in 1892.
Flora McDaniel Pitts had been very much opposed to Tom's building next door, fearing that he would put up a "Cheap" house. Tom, slightly nettled at Mrs Pitts subtle hint that he was not able to finance a house that would harmonize with the other two, proceeded to erect the most elaborate of the three.

Tom BROWN was a "Drummer", a traveling salesman for Peebles and Trotter, wholesale grocery firm in Chatanooga and later for Reynolds Tobacco Co. His wife was Mary Humphries of Ramhurst.
Tom and Mary had five children, two of whom died young. The three surviving were Effie Lee, Jake named for his grandfather Humphries, and Robert.
With such a big house , Mary BROWN could not sit with folded hands, nor live with only her children for company while her husband was traveling, so she kept paying guest. Professor Fulton, Princpal of Calhoun Academy, boarded with her, and widower Robert Mizell. Lovely b n-eyed Myra Hopper. from Petersburg lived at Mrs B n's and attended the Academy.
Tom's younger brother Gus had come from his home out in Dry Valley to stay with Mary and go to school.
Tom had bor ed money from Mr Smith, a wealthy railroad man to build his fine new house. Later Mr Smith demanded payment and Tom couldn't pay, so the house was sold at a sheriff's sale to J T Black for $1,750.
Tom traveled by horse and buggy. He did not return from one of his trips and his family never knew what happened to him. A body that might have been him was found in the back waters of a river in Alabama, but positive identification was never made.
Mary greived for many months but finally went to work for Hall Bros. Department Store. There she met and later married A Mr Walling, a salesman from Texas. She died in a nursing home in Carrollton, Ga.

JOSESPH LEE5 BROWN (WILLIAM SILAS4, SAMUEL3, LEWIS2, UNK1) was born October 29, 1871, and died July 24, 1961 in Hazlehurst, Ga, buried Hazlehurst Cemetary. He married ELLA HARDY, daughter of WILLIAM HARDY and MARY NICHOLS. She was born September 18, 1875, and died November 27, 1961.

News Article: J L BROWN DIES IN HAZLEHURST. Funeral services for J L B n, age 89, of Hazlehurst, Ga, were held July 25, at the First Methodist Church of Hazlehurst. The Rev. Allen Johnson and Rev, Richard Daves officiated.
Mr BROWN died early Monday morning, July 24, in the Chapman Convalescent Home after a long illness. He is survived by his wife, Mrs Ella Hardy B n; two daughters, Mrs Virginia McEntyre of Brunswick and Mrs Sarah Bell of Hazlehurst; Four sons, Dupont of Oglethorpe, Jimmy of Jesup, Jewell of California, and Mixon of Wisconsin; three brothers, Ben of Oklahoma, Gus of Sugar Valley, and Rankin of Marietta; two sisters, Mary West of West Point and Mrs Wincie Norrell of Dalton. Fifteen grandchildren also survive. Burial was in the Hazlehurst Cemetery.

Joe BROWN moved to Hazlehurst from Jessup in the early 1900's. He was an electrician and went to work for Clarey Williams who owned an Electric Co and the Water Plant. Joe pulled the switch to turn on the first electric street lights for Hazlehurst, all three of them. He later moved back to the country and farmed until his health began to fail. He then came back to town and was caretaker for the Hazlehurst City Cemetary until he retired.

LEWIS ELBERT5 BROWN (WILLIAM SILAS4, SAMUEL3, LEWIS2, UNK1) was born June 14, 1874 in Born at Reeves Station, Gordon Co, Ga, and died February 24, 1955 in Buried Antioch Church Cem, Calhoun, Gordon Co Ga. He married JULIA E GRAVITT January 10, 1897, daughter of JASPER GRAVITT and SAMANTHA YOUNGBLOOD. She was born September 30, 1878 in Born at Flowery Branch, Forsyth Co, Ga, and died April 11, 1951 in Buried Antioch Church Cem, Gordon Co, Ga.
 

Notes for LEWIS ELBERT B N:
Born June 14, 1874, Gordon County Ga., married Julia Gravitt, was married by the Rev J T Pendley, and witnessed by S P Collins and Jennie (Pass) Pendley. Lewis was a farmer. In addition to cotton, in the late 1920's and early 30's, he grew sweet potatoes of which he propagated and sold the plants (Slips) in the spring. He also grew apples. He owned two farms during his lifetime. The first was on Dews Pond Road, Antioch Community, Calhoun, Ga. This old home place is about 1/4 mile back from the highway, directly across from the Golf Course owned and operated by Maurice Gravitt. Around 1939 he sold this farm to Jim Reeves who built lake Amakanata on the property. The second farm was by Oostanaula School house. In 1997 the old house had been torn down and a new house had been built by Robert King of King Insurance, Calhoun, Ga. But the old log barn was still standing. A picture of this barn taken in 1956 is in Mama Edwards "Southern Cooking" Cook Book.
He was a proud American, he would walk the 5 miles plus to the County Court House , pay his poll tax and vote. When ask why he didn't ride the horse, named Doby, he replied "She works here too, it's her day off." He liked to chew tobacco, and always carried a plug of BROWN Mule chewing tobacco in his pocket.
When he bought the farm in Oostanaula it was mostly new ground, full of stumps and grubs. He would work all winter digging and burning the grubs and roots. The first couple years all ground plowing work was with a G-Whiz, a type of cultivator that only scratched the ground. He later along with grandson Scotty, blew hundreds of stumps out of the ground with dynamite. He always carried a pocket watch, and this watch was one of his most prized possession. He said it was an Elgin, a railroad watch, he had traded a mule for it. Scotty BROWN has this watch, and in year 2000 it is still running. He also had his own blacksmith shop, with forge and anvil, where he sharpened the plows and shaped shoes for the horses and mules.
A story overheard between Lewis and his brother Rankin. When we were children, prayer meeting would be held at night. Children had to sit with their parents so it was hard for the boys and girls to talk with each other, so a boy would wink at a girl and if she winked back then it was OK for the boy to walk her home from church. No cars so everyone either came by wagon, buggy, rode a horse/mule, or walked. They would have to walk along with her family.
NEWS ARTICLE: Lewis E B n, Retired Farmer Dies Thursday. Lewis E B n, age 80, died at his home, at Oostanaula Thursday night at 9:30.
Mr BROWN spent most of his life in Gordon County and was a retired farmer.
Surviving are one son, Wade BROWN of Oostanaula; one daughter, Mrs Effie Mae Hunt of Key West, Fla; 10 grandchildren; four brothers, Joe BROWN of Hazlehurst, Ben B n, Oklahoma City, Okla., Rankin B n, Marietta, and R A (Gus) BROWN of Sugar Valley. Three sisters, Mrs Addie Floyd of Plainville, Mrs Mary West of West Point, and Mrs Wincie Norrell, Dalton. Several nieces and nephews survive.
Funeral services were held from Antioch Baptist Church Sunday at 2 o'clock conducted by the Rev H E Holland.
The Bohannon Quartet had charge of the music and burial was in Antioch Cemetery beside his wife Julia.


Notes for JULIA E GRAVITT:
Born in Forsyth County, Flowery Branch, Sep 1878, she married Lewis E B n of Gordon County. Julia was nicknamed and called "Big Maw". Her mother, Youngblood was claimed to be 1/8 Cherokee Indian. She told that as a child, she and her mother would go to her grandmothers house, which was a log cabin. Tobacco leaves were cured, rolled by hand and twisted. Pieces would be pulverized, rolled in BROWN paper and smoked, chewed, or the dust dipped as snuff. Chewed pieces would be placed between the logs to dry, and then smoked in corn cobb pipes.
When she and brother Mack were teenagers their mother died. Their father went to Pickens County, Ga., and remarried to Angiline C . The children did not get along well with the new wife so her father Jake ask his father John Gravitt of Gordon County, and brother Leroy to raise the two children.
A family reunion picture was taken at Julia and Lewis' house in 1919, it was first thought to not show Julia. However it does. Maurice Gravitt said well you know why shes not there, she's in the kitchen, she was one of the best cooks you ever seen.
Julia liked to fish and dip snuff. She almost always had a snuff brush from a black gum bush in her mouth. Whenever it rained and they could not work in the fields, she could be seen digging worms and heading to the creek to fish.

Notes for RICHARD AGUSTAS "GUS" B N:
Born Oct 19. 1889- 1950, he lived, owned and farmed, the old Belv Chandler place on Mountain Loop Road, Sugar Valley, Gordon County Ga. Married Minnie Lee Harkins. By the house there was a cold water flowing spring. They would keep jars of milk in the spring to stay cool. The water flowed to a lake where Gus and his children had formed a Dam. By the spring was a large Buckeye Tree, the only one this writer has ever seen. His house was underpinned with rock. The Morter Joints were raised and smoothed with a special tool. In the yard under the oak tree was a box pen built with chicken wire, and inside was two squirrels that had been raised by the boys.
Gus liked to tell this story. When he was living at his brother Tom's place in Calhoun, Ga., and going to school, Tom's wife Mary ran a boarding house. One night they were seated in the living room when Tony Bandy, the cook, came in laughing so hard she couldn't speak. Tony, what in the world are you laughing at, Mary ask. Mis Mary, you know that high up window in the kitchen, where we th out bones and the dogs fight over them. Well, I thinks I'll see what this ole bone eatin dog wil do, so I th s a pan of boiling water out the window. Why Tony, Mary hollered, aren't you ashamed to be so cruel to that dog. No'm Mis Mary, them dogs always aggravate me, always gnawing, g ling and barking under the window. Gus ask, what did the dog do, Tony? He just ran head on into Mis Kings board fence, as she left the room still laughing about her trick, unaware of any criticism.
Gus would tell that Henry Pitts , only child of Logan and Flora, was playing with Mary's children, and one night was ask to stay for supper. After the blessing, Mary said, Henry you are not eating, there's lots of food on the table. Henry looked around and said I don't see anything I like. What do you eat at home, Mary ask. Well Papa don't come home, and me and Mother just drinks a glass of milk and eats a biscuit. Gus would just smile, you could see the twinkle in his eyes.

ROBERT RANKIN5 BROWN (WILLIAM SILAS4, SAMUEL3, LEWIS2, UNK1) was born December 01, 1882, and died August 27, 1965 in Mareitta, Ga. He married (1) NELLIE MAE MATTHEWS, daughter of HENREY MATTHEWS and NANCY ABLES. She was born June 1888 in Paulding Co, Ga, and died December 29, 1952. He married (2) FRANCES COX ELLIOTT.
 

Notes for ROBERT RANKIN B N:

Robert Rankin, son of William Silas B n, was born in Gordon County, December 1882-1965. As a young man he was a farmer at Reeves Station and Resacca. He decided he did not want to farm so he moved to Atlanta.
Was a Trolly (Street Car- Motorman) operator in the City of Atlanta. In 1935 he opened and ran a family grocery store on old US Hwy 41, south of Marietta, Ga, about 5 miles from the town square.
The Rail Road and Electric Street Car line ran across the street from the Store. One of the stops was almost in front of the Store. I used to visit him when I was about 10-12 years old. I thought it was neat to live behind a store. When a train came by at night and blowed the whistle it was really loud. His youngest son "Fudge" was a good baseball player. I went with Uncle Rankin to see him play a few times.
He lived in an attached living space to the rear of the Store. Had some children, and remarried after his first wife died. She aleniated the children . It is my understanding that the children did not visit him in his last few years, and the grandchildren were not allowed to visit him. I visited him in 1954 and stayed for lunch. When I opened my napkin to remove my silverware, I found the napkin was full of cat hair. This probably illustrates the problem with the new wife and children.
Rankin was a kind man and liked to tell stories of experiences when he was g ing up. I remember when he would come and visit that he and my grandpa, Lewis, would sit on the porch and talk about old times. Rankin liked to tell stories that he had heard from his father. One story was about a group of men who called themselves the Night Riders. They would take the law into their hands and administer punishment, burn down their house, whip the person, etc. I remember saying, you mean the KKK. He told me no, that this group was not the same. To support his stories and to qualify this one to have some merrit, this is a true story and can be researched in the Atlanta paper around December, 1889. Times were hard and a man with a large family had to make a living any way he could. In the mountains of North Georgia business flourished with home made stills to make and market moonshine whiskey.
The Feds trying to shut them down and collect taxes set up a reward system to help informers. A man named John Coffey was granted immunity in exchange for his testimony. After one trial John left Georgia, it was said that he moved to Texas. In the 1890's this reward system inspired a group of men to band together for protection and retaliation. The group numbering about 20, from Sharp Top milita district, formed a secret society called "The Honest Man's Friend and Protector", later to be called the " Pickens County Nightriders".
They swore to protect each other and to keep their whiskey business a closely guarded secret. "Death" was promised anyone of the members who broke their vow of secrecy. For two years houses went up in smoke, suspected informers were whipped, sometimes shot and entire families fled in terror as their houses were torched by a band of men in bizzare disguises of hoods, cloaks, mask and blackened faces. It was against this action that the Nightriders overstepped their bounds of the law once too often.
It all began on the morning of December 3, 1889. It was found out that a trusted ally W N "Nels" Ledford, not only had he become an informer but had actually led the Feds in a raid of a nunber of moonshine stills. Two letters was sent to Ledford and he ignored them. When he started on his trip to Atlanta to testify, Old Jack Landsdown and his sons Seaborn and Little Jack left home. They went in separate directions but their mission was common, they had to round-up as many of the Riders as possible. That night, Thomas and Eli Fields, Harrison Jones, Thomas Pendley, Tom land, George Coffey, Alexander Richards, Marcus Holbert, Arch Grizzle, John Forester and Mark Holbret met in the church yard.
They burned the home of Nels Ledford, and while doing the act, Mary Ledford, Nels wife, recognized Old Jack Landsdown. This sealed the fate of the Riders, they were caught and put in jail. Old Jack, Seaborn, Harrison Jones and George Coffey escaped from jail. While on the run, Jack was killed in a shoot out with the Law. Coffey testified against the group and the rest of them drew life in prison. Most of the men died there from various diseases, mostly malaria, while in prison. Thomas Pendley and Eli Coffey were later released. A grandson of Harrison Jones said he remembered Thomas Pendley walking with baby steps after his release and continued to walk that way until his death.

Died of peritonitis, following a burst appendix. She had been ill for 8 days. She had been in bad health for several years due to heart trouble.

WINCIE ELIZA5 BROWN (WILLIAM SILAS4, SAMUEL3, LEWIS2, UNK1) was born May 12, 1891, and died Abt. 1950 in Dalton, Ga. She married EDD LEODON NORRELL, son of JAMES NORRELL and AMANDA MASSEY. He was born August 19, 1890, and died September 19, 1930 in Hill City, Gordon Co, Ga. Buried Dorsett Cemetery.
 

Notes for EDD LEODON NORRELL:
Born at Hill City, Gordon County, August 19, 1890. Buried in Dorsett Cemetery, Resacca, Ga., along with five small children. Although not confirmed it is believed that Ed drove a flatbed logging truck, and was hauling lumber when a front wheel ran off. He apparently was trying to switch one of the dual's off the back when somehow the load of lumber shifted and fell on Ed and broke him up real bad, of which he never recovered.

Born in Gordon County, Feb 1909, she is buried in Mt Pleasant Cemetary, Red Bud, Gordon County, under the name of Roe. When you watch a movie, you hear music played in the background. Before music was dubbed onto the film so that it is played along with the movie, story and scene, local talent would be employed by the theater to provide this music side effect. Addie Pearlyine, called "Peggy", for a while played the guitar at the Calhoun, Ga movie theater. She studied to be a private Nurse. While caring for a patient in Red Bud, with TB, she contacted the disease, which was terminal. She had a child while seriously ill and the baby only lived a few days. Peggy died eight days later.

Was the son of a Share Crop Farmer. At the time of his death by pneumonia, he was working night shift at the Cotton Mill in North Calhoun, Ga. He went by the name of "Myron" and his friends nicknamed him "Footsie", wore a size 17.

Father died a few days before he was born. Mother died around age 7. Was raised by his grandparents, Lewis and Julia BROWN Attended Antioch School when it was a two room Grammer school. After the school burned down, attended Red Bud School. Graduated from Ostanaula High School, Gordon County, Calhoun, GA in 1946. Assisted in farming during this period. After school worked at Cannon Cotton Mill, Dalton, Ga; City of Calhoun; Shannon Mills and Sears in Atlanta. Joined the Army Air Force in Jan 1948, took basic training at Lackland AFB, San Antonio, Tex. Remained at Lackland and worked Incoming Processing. Job was to meet all trains and buses to greet new enlistees and escort them to the base. When Korean war broke out, left Lackland to open Sampson AFB, Geneva NY. Married in 1951. Was assigned to Tachikawa AFB, Japan, in 1952. Assigned to Lackland AFB, Tex upon return. Was a member of the base softball team which won the Air Force World Championship in 1955. Other stations were Hq TTAF, Gulfport, Miss; Eglin AFB, Ft Walton Beach, Fla. While stationed here was a member of the initial computerization of Personnel and Finance records; Chateroux AFB, France; Spangdahlem AFB, Germany and Charleston AFB, Charleston, SC. Received numerous awards an commendation medals. Retired from the Air Force in 1969 as a CM/Sgt (E-9). Started Pendley Homes, Inc., in 1972 and built approximately 400 custom homes in the Charleston area. Had by-pass heart surgery in 1987. Collected, wrote and published an Edwards family cookbook in 1995. Colon/Rectal cancer surgery in 1998. Retired from Home Building in 1995. Hobbies are Golf, Fishing and Gardening.

Was a farmer and carpenter. Worked at Lockheed in Marietta, Ga., on the B-29 during WWII. I remember that he once took an aluminum nut from his station and cut and sanded it into a ring. About once a year he would go with his father and buy a goat, skin, clean and cook. Being raised on a farm, I was interested in the goat because I had never been close to a live goat. I wanted them to buy a goat and keep in the pasture. I was told that they used to have a goat, and they would never keep a live one again. It seems that a goat will eat about anything, and he tells that one day as they came home from working in the fields, hoeing cotton, the goat was standing in an open window chewing on their bed sheets. Bang! No more goat.
