William Washington Gordon I History

namesake of Gordon County, Georgia

 

Born: 1796 - Died 1842
First Georgian to graduate from U. S. Army Military Academy at West Point.
Mayor of Savannah.
He was the grandfather of Juliette Gordon Low, the founder of Girl Scouts of America.
A monument to William Washington Gordon stands at the center of Wright Square in Savannah. The monument was erected in 1893.
