Hon. John F. Howard, Tax Assessor for Thomas Co. Died Wednesday
The Cairo Messenger, February 24, 1905

The community was shocked on Wednesday last to learn that John F. Howard had died suddenly at this home near this city. Mr. Howard had only been ill for several days, and his death was the first intimation that his friends received of his illness. There was no more popular man in the entire county than John Howard, and his demise is a most untimely and unfortunate loss. He leaves five little orphan children, their mother having died some two years ago. Mr. Howard was a man of frail health, and the attack of pneumonia was doubtless brought on by a severe wetting he received only about ten days ago. He was 49 years of age, and was born and reared in Thomas county, and was serving his second term as Tax Assessor. He was an efficient and capable officer, and by his close attention to his duty had materially increased the taxable values of the county. He was a kindly and Christian gentleman, loved and honored by his friends. he will be sadly missed, both as a man and an officer. His five little children are left alone in the world except for the protection of their uncle, Mr. George Howard, and the sympathy of the whole county goes out to them in their hour of sorrow and distress. May the Good Father who watches over us all care tenderly for the little orphans who are left alone to struggle with many and multiplied vicissitudes of life.

A.J. Joiner
The Cairo Messenger, April 14, 1905

In Memoriam
Our beloved brother, A. J. Joiner, a long and consistent member of Pine Level Baptist Church, who was born Oct. 14, 1827; departed this life and was gathered to the house of his Fathers on Oct 25th, 1904 leaving behind him a record worthy to be followed by all his fellow men, and a vacancy never to be filled in the hearts of those who knew and loved him best. At the early age of sixteen he was baptized in the fellowship of the Summer Hill Church and from there he removed to Evergreen Church in Miller county. That was in 1850, and became one of the pillars of that faithful body. At the time of his death he was united with the Pine Level Church in Decautr Co. He had been ordained a deacon. His remains were interred in Camilla, Ga. "After life's fitful fever he rests well." May we all follow in his footsteps, and reach the promised land. By the Commitee,

SAD DEATH OCCURED LAST SUNDAY AFTERNOON
ROY KNIGHT

One of the saddest misfortunes to occur in Cairo in some time was the death of Roy, the 14-year old son of Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Knight of this city. The little fellow was found last Sunday afternoon about 4:30 o'clock in an empty gasolene tank car in the A. C. L. Railroad yards by Emory Asbell. When found Roy was in an unconscious condition. Asbell claims that, while playing with his younger brother, he got on the running board of the car, and hearing some one groan in the tank, and also seeing that the cap was off, went on top and looked down, seeing someone. He says that he immediately ran and got help. A good many people soon arrived on the scene and after two attempts, a rope was looped about his body and in this manner he was pulled out, but in a dying condition. Just how long he had remained in the car is not known. Although there was no gasolene in the tank, except a very small amount that is always left, owing to the fact that all of it can not drain out, the fumes were too much for Roy, and no doubt, he was overcome with them when he first entered. From a knot on his head, it is thought that he attempted to climb the ladder that leads into the tank, and after nearing the top could not make it out and fell bak unconscious, striking his his head in the fall. He was taken to Dr. Walker's Sanitarium, where he died about 8:45 o'clock, without never gaining consciousness. It is said that his lungs were practically burned up from the affects of the gas fumes. Just how or when he went into the car may never be known, as no one has been found who saw him enter. He was last seen about 3l3ven o'clock Sunday morning by some children. The case is being investigated. The funeral services were held Monday afternoon at three o'clock at the cairo cemetery, being conducted by Dr. J. A. Wynne and attended by a large concourse of sorrowing relatives and friends. The remains were laid to rest in the Cairo cemetery. Roy was a very bright boy and was well liked by everyone with whom he came in contact. He was 14 years of age on October 11th last. He is survived by his father and mother and five brothers, besides numerous relatives and friends. We extend condolence to the bereaved ones.

DIED- MISS SOPHIA LEE

Last Monday evening at 3:30 o'clock Miss Sophia Lee, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Lee, was laid to rest in the Gainey cemetery. She leaves a father, mother, 6 brothers and 3 sisters and a host of friends to mourn her death. She was a very popular young lady and in the prime of life, but we feel that God has taken his own and we know that when He calls or takes some of our relatives or friends that we are at a great loss, but we hope that our loss will be her eternal gain. She was nota member of any church, but has always honored her father and mother and had kept all the other commandments that God had given her as far as any one knows, and we are taught that if we keep the ten commandments that God has given us, that when we pass out of this life that we will enter into a better kingdom that God has prepared for his angels, and we pray that God will look down upon the bereaved family and heal their wounded hearts. We extend our heart-felt sympathy to the bereaved family, and pray God's richest blessings upon them, for we are taught to love thy neighbor as thyself, and we hope that the dear one that has been taken from us did, and has gone to reap her reward in heaven.

NOTICE FROM "NEWSY NOTES FROM WHIGHAM

MRS. MANDY MOORE

Whigham was shrouded with sadness Friday morning when a phone message came from Mars Hill section, telling of the death of Mrs. Mandy Moore, which occurred at her home at 5 o'clock Friday morning, after a few days confinement to her bed. She had not been in good health for several years, however, she was seldom confined to her room. She leaves 5 daughters to mourn the loss of a mother, and several sisters, three brothers and an aged mother. Interment Saturday morning in the family cemetery near her home.
IN MEMORY OF MRS. AMANDA MOORE
When the golden morning in russet mantle clad came tripping over the hills of the eatern horizon, on last Thursday, January the seventh, and dispelled the darkness that had overshadowed the bosom of mother earth like a pall the night before, the tear-drops of dew that coursed down the cheeks of the blushing flowers and caused them to scintillate with the radiance of diamonds, the soul of Mrs. Amanda Moore winged its flight from this world of pain and sorrow to realms unknown, to join her husband who had preceded her fourteen years before. The news of her death came to the writer like a thunderbolt from a cloudless sky, filling his heart with pain and causing his soul to overflow with sorrow. We knew that Mrs. Moore had been confined to her bed for several days, but little did we realize her to be so near death's door. Several days before her death she was seized with an attack of neuralgia, which run on until that dreadful malada, pneumonia, developed, but then it was not thought that her case was so serious until a short time before her death, when she began to sind rapicly. All that medical skill and good nursing could do was done to revive her but to no avail. She died Thursday morning just at daybreak.
Note: There may be more on the following page. This not being my relative, I did not check.
