Class Portrait 1911
The youngsters in the accompanying picture were in the third and fourth grades at the Monticello District School in 1911. The picture was loaned to us by Mrs. R. D. Campbell, whose late husband posed with his classmates for the photograph. Miss Bessie Banks was the teachers of the two classes.
The school building stood on the site of the old elementary school on College Street. The building was replaced in 1923.
Among the students who have been identified are: Audrey Leverette, R. D. Campbell, Lint Thomason, Powell Goolsby, Irene Alexander, Catherine Lane, Mamie Penn, Walker Flournoy, Annie Lizzie Powell, Dorothy Penn, Rogers Downs, Carter Stinson, Rose Malone, Lois Gilmore, Eva Blackwell, Oscar Roberts, Lillie Funderburke, Elizabeth Atkins, Gladys Jordan, Sally V. Lane and Susie Holland.

Among Monticello District School students in 1911 were: Valley Bearden, Alvert Folds, Corry Goodman, George Harvey, Mary Henderson, Katherine Lane, Carolyn Furse, Ida Hecht, Mary K. Knight, Norman Barker, Mattie Downs, Mildred Gilmore, and Harvey Powell.
