STUDENTS IN MONTICELLO DISTRICT SCHOOL PICTURE IDENTIFIED

By John Harvey

The students in the picture carried in "Reflections" on January 27 have all been identified.

There were a number of calls identifying one or two students, but no one was able to identify all of them.  Then Mrs. Homer A. (Miss Anna) Jordan stopped me in the grocery store and said, 'I'm in the picture in last week's paper and I put a list identifying all of them in the mail for you this morning."  The letter came the next day, with some additional information about the two classes picture.

Miss Anna says that the picture is of the fourth and fifth grades.  (We had said third and fourth).  There were only ten grades in the school when the picture was made.  She said:  "We were the last two grades to attend school in the old building before it was torn down to build the building now located on the site.  The next year the students went to school in the Courthouse, churches, and the Florence House.  The building was torn down the next year."

She sets the year that the building was torn down as 1919.  Our date for completion of the new building was based on the dedication program in May, 1924.  That program, which a number of people still have, was headed "Monticello and Jasper County, 1800-1924".

The class members as given by Mrs. Jordan are:

Front row: Gertie Huff, Mary King Knight, Annie Lizzie Powell, Rosa Malone, Albert Talmadge, Annie Florence, Hattie Kelly, Dorothy Penn, Lilliones Malone.
