"To the Future Historian. We shall doubtless have a new history, or an additional volume of our history, written at the celebration of our bi-centennial, a hundred years hence, if not before. The writer of that history is now unborn and will so remain for a long time. But whoever he or she may be, I bequeath to the historian of a century hence the task of exploring further and bringing to light whatever historical gems I may have left buried. Moreover, I bestow on you, the historian of the future, all in this book that is able to stand the test of time and survive for a century. Finally, I am leaving to you, elsewhere in this book, a picture of myself. In doing this, I am not assuming that you would care to use the picture; but you may at least feel a kindred interest in the first official historian of Lumpkin County."
