Letter from John Sartain, Jr. to his father John Sartain, Sr.
November 10th, 1849

 Dear Father I once more through the mercy of God I rite you few lines to let you know that we ar all well at this time and the connectean is all well as far as I know and I hope when you git these lines they will find enjoying the same blessing. I received your letter the 2nd day of November. It was dated in August But I was glad to hear from you and was glad to hear that yose was all well. you rite to me you wanted to know about James Sartain.  he hant done no work sence sum time in April. He had the Santantis frien on his left arm and he hant done no work sence. His health is verry bad. He jest can go about. He cam over last week and stade with me two or three days. His son, James is mared [married]. He mared a girl by the name of Betsy Dicka. James Sartain’s Anny that mared___________is ded. She died September with the fever. John_Hendricks shot himself. He was round the field a hunting squirrels. Ould Houston was with him. The gun went off in hand. He was up on log the bulet went in one inch and a half above the right nipple and come out under his shoulder blade. It was dun one even three ours [hours] by sun and he died the next day at Sun Down. I went and help tote him to the house.

Corn crop is purty good, cotton is sorry by so much rain. We had the wettest summer I have ever seen. Corn is worth from .40 to .50 per bushel. Wheat is worth $1.50 per bushel. Wheat was verry sorry. We had frost hear on the 16 of April that killed the wheat, cotton and corn. Cotton is worth from .09 to .10 in Memphis. My wagon is gon to Memphis now. Milford Wilson is driven for me. I have maid 28 waggin loads corn. I think I made seven hundred bushels corn. I think I will make 9 thousand pound cotton. James Sartain has sorry crop corn, good crop cotton. His bottom land was to wet for corn. John Wilson has maid verry good crop. Tapley Sartain and McCann Smith and James Hendrick,______Hendrick, Jeremiah Hendrick and Tom Stephens is all doing tolerable well and father I want you to sell my land and try to get sum money for it if you can or do the best you can with it and I want you to tell Elisha to try if there is any chance to collect that money and pay you and when you get this letter I want you to rite to me and I want you to rite how all the auld nabors is coming on. David Crider, John Crider, Lindsey Bond, Aaron Smith, Robert Smith, John Cheek and old Uncle Fred Scarborough and his boys and all the nabors. I want to hear from you all. Don’t think I am out of the world becase im in the Misissipe. I am here at home at work in the _________and I want to see you all once more if I could once more. My wife wish to be remembered to you all. Me and my wife and my children and her children is getting long first rate. The children all________verry well. I must close my letter and if we never meet on earth I hope we will meet where parting will be no more as I am still trying to get to that world of rest that remains for the people of God. So no more at this time.
