Water Valley, Miss. Feb 23, 1872

Mrs. Emelee Sartain Dear Friend taking this as an opportunity I thought I would rite you a few liens to enforme you that I havent forgot you. I think you are mistaken about riting the lonst [last] letter. I think I rote the last one, perhaps you did not git it. I havent nothing Strange to rite you. We have had a vary cold winter. We have had a heap of snow. We had snow for 9 days. We have had a frosty winter this time and it is cold yet and no sine of eny peach blooms. I can Say that we are all [well] this morning. I have had as good helth Sence I have bin hear as I ever did in my life. I havent had a chill sence I bin hear nor nun of the children, only Amanda. She had 3 or 4 Sorter Chillers. Well I will tell you how much we made last year. We made plemty of corn to do us and Some to Spair. We kild about 2300 lbs of pork. Our hevest hog weighed 268 lbs and we made $754.62 cents worth of Cotton and sold 40 Bushels of feeding Seed at 25 cents pur Bushel. We sold fify three dollars worth of water melones and we have Sold 12 dollars woth of Eggs Sence mew years day. If you can beet that and Stay thar Just Stay. I am glad that your Church is improving. I havent put my letter in no Church yet. Tell Martha that I will Bring hur Some quilts Squares whend I come. Tell hur to be a good girl. Rit to me who Thom Bray was. I don’t remember him. Give my best love and respected to Aunte Annie. Tell her I wante to See them vary bad. Tell John and Perlee to except my best wishes. Tell them I wante to See them vary bad. I will Send you and Martha some Candee as a Christmas gift. Yours is No One To Love. Martha’s is Ask My Mother.  I want to tell you about Alford and Amanda to rite and if tha donte rite I wante you to rite to me what is the reson. I haven’t heard a word from them Sence las December. I will now clos hoping that these liens will find you all well. Rite as Soon as you git this letter. I still remain yous until Death

Transcriber’s note:  Alfred Sartain was the brother of Lewis who died in CSA War and was the first husband of Martha, the author of this letter. Alfred’s wife was Amanda Beard, the sister of Martha A. Sartain. Emelee [Emily] was the widow of Vandiver Sartain.
